Red X and no connecting
« on: May 04, 2007, 10:40:05 am »
I've read some various threads and have been trying different things for a while but things still won't work for me.

At first I just had the message in the top left section about something not connecting but forget just what it was. It was the one saying something about the patch not working or connecting?    Sometime later whenever I opened WinMX it came/comes up with a little square window in the middle of the WinMX window.   I uninstalled WinMX and some eventually I installed it again and it still has the same problems.  When I try to connect it also shows the yellow light and eventually it's just black and nothing happens.

I tried uninstalling and installing the different versions and at the moment have 3.54 beta 4 again.   For firewalls I checked the windows XP firewall and it was off but turned it on and put WinMX to be allowed. Also have Zone Alarm Pro and clicked to allow the two WinMX I saw listed as well as blocking it and allowing it again.  Unless there are others listed somewhere I need to allow I don't know of.

That is all I can think of for now.  Was wondering if there's something I'm missing or anything else to try that could work  :-\

try this as step one, turn xp firewall back off, as you have zone alarm & running 2 at once is a bad idea, find the winmx program folder (usually in c:\program files\ ) & completely delete it, this will ensure no damaged files survive, then install fresh from www.winmxgroup.com

see what happens

Thanks for replying.  I went into the XP firewall settings but it was already turned off for me apparently.  I uninstalled WinMX and then reinstalled the 3.54 beta 4 and it's still doing the same thing.   I think I orgot to mention - though it might not matter - that of course in the section to the top left of the WinMX window is just a white space instead of saying anything, also.

Try with ZA set to allow all, or off completely, sometimes ZoneAlarm refuses to play nicely with WinMX, I've known people have to uninstall ZA to get winmx working, if this turns out to be the case with you, there are alternates & the windows firewall is adequate in most situations in any case, it basically HAS to be half-decent.. imagine the furore & headline news if suddenly a fault was found in it affecting millions of windows systems.. you can bet M$ would have it fixed in the very next critical update...

it took them 6 months after being told about the major issue allowing all NT4, 2000, XP and 2003 systems to be infected remotely on default configurations before they finally got around to patching it, and then they only did so after someone made a worm to use that known flaw that attacked microsoft directly (to get their attention) - which btw the media blamed the worm on the person who discovered and reported it, and made little mention to microsoft knowing about it for 6 months and ignoring it

but getting back on topic:

that error sounds like it is related to a failure to start winsock, try going to start > run and running "sfc /scannow" - you might need your windows CD if anything is corrupted and windows doesn't have a good copy backed up anywhere

I ran that and it says "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.  Insert your Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM now."

But I don't have such a thing..

well you have a few options, simplest is to get one, with a valid licence key microsoft will supply "replacement media" for a nominal charge (it really isn't much), or you could try reinstalling service pack2 (or installing it if you havn't) this replaces lots of windows dlls with patched & improved ones, fair chance it'll include those ones that are missing...

if your pc came new without such a disk (for example HP/Compaq) they have a procedure for non destructive recovery of your system, which is worth a shot, usually you'll find a step by step guide on their website if you feed in the pc's model number..

I finally got it working.  Tried a few of the ideas listed and downloaded some update from the Microsoft site and that worked.  Though now after downloaded something for WinMX at the top it says "Welcome back from WinMXWorld!!!" and it just keeps saying connecting.  Haven't looked for things about that yet though so I'll go do that now.
