Why is it I can still connect without using the new patch?

I believe that is because km is redirecting the requests on his old dns to new ones
So until he finally stops doing that you can still use his patch. But if soemday, you cannot, then i'd recommend that you use the wmw patch.
He's doing it basically so that the usercount is not too damaged by the closure of his caches.

Or you can use it now and forget about this

This patch stuff is getting confusing. I downloaded setup_xp-vista.exe from here to reconnect, now that is gone and new patches are listed. Which one is it?

just download patch only, it does all windows versions 95 through vista

that sounds like it's km's 3.1 beta, i know there have been attempts at hexing that, but that message is his update bar replacement unable to connect, please try one of the installers here:
