Hi, Not that I have got Winmx to work yet, I think its maybe because I've routed it through a proxy server which I haven't configured properly, but how do we know that the patch is working, which is the reason I rerouted via proxy, as it used to state 'Patch Operational', but now says nothing. Have I erred on the side of caution?

hi William,

The reason the Patch Operational message disappeared for everyone is because WinMX Group decided to close down.  A new modified version of that patch is in use now and you can get it here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/connection.html

You can use the top one called Set Up For Existing installs.  Run this and it should get you reconnected, up and running.  There is also a link on that page that tells you the changes made in modifications, called Patch Information.  Click that for further details.

Keep in mind in the future that the update bar is just that, its an internet page designed to let you know of any updates or important messages.  If it doesnt load for some reason, under normal circumstances, the patch may still be operational and a restart will fix the udpate usually..

Also be sure you dont use the proxy, in WinMX Settings > Outgoing TCP set that to 'Do Not Use A Proxy, make a direct connection' and restart if it wasnt already set this way.

Thanks, Re-downloaded 3.54 Beta with patch, not using proxy, but downloads and uploads after 'waiting for incoming connections' are timed out. Still cant seem to connect. Recently purchased new 'Vista' system, could this be the problem. Never had any problems before Winmx went offline, when I used Windows XP.

Be sure when you install the patch that you check the box that says Vista version of patch, if you have done this .. thats fine.. although that version of patch has a fix for 'frequent disconnections' on secondary.  If you havin issues with transfers timing out its usually down to a modem with built in router or just a straight router, or possibly even a firewall.  Be sure that you have mapped ports where needed.

If you are not sure, most DSL modems with ethernet WILL have built in routers and you can go to http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

Look for your make and model, then on the next page select WInMX from the list and follow the directions there.  Be sure to let us know if you still need further assistance.  By the way if your unsure if you 'ticked' the Vista patch during install you can always run it again making a clean install.

Hi, searched for Vista version of patch, but could not find it. Found a check box under downloads that stated,'Use standard patch instead of Vista modification', which I took to mean only check box if you don't run Vista. I didn't check box. Have I mis-understood the correct meaning and I should have checked box for Vista. The option reading was somewhat confusing.

the installer automatically selects patch according to windows version detected.. there *is* a box to force a switch, this will change vista users onto the non vista patch (could be problems) and pre vista users onto the vista version *might* solve an unusual problem

in all cases on all windows versions, the recommended action is leave that box unchecked, the default choice the installer makes in 99.99something cases out of 100 will be the right one

Thanks for all your help. I have done everything that you have said, and am now able to download. But as before, nobody has managed to upload from me after being timed out waiting for incoming connection.

that will be a port issue in all likelihood.. the installer may even have mentioned a private network ip during setup... i'd suggest a visit to portforward.com armed with the make & model of your router (most likely incorporated into your modem.. make/model of modem in that case) & follow the instructions for winmx
