Filesharing Equality System To Undergo Tests

The BBC headline seemed way out of line with the content but they are trying their best I suppose  :?

Researchers have found a way to enforce good manners on file-sharing networks by treating bandwidth as a currency.
The team has created a peer-to-peer system called Tribler in which selfless sharers earn faster upload and download speeds but leechers are penalised.
While file-sharing networks are good ways to help lots of people get hold of large files often they have far more people taking from the system than they do giving.

Using bandwidth as a kind of currency helps to encourage better habits said Dr Johan Pouwelse, an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology, Amsterdam and co-creator of Tribler.
Dr Pouwelse has been working with associate professor David Parkes from Harvard University to add an accounting system to Tribler to encourage users to upload as often as they download.

Anyone recognise the professors name from an filesahring case where he testified for the defence as an expert on the kazzaa p2p network ?

I,m sure his system has merit but its not what anyone would call revolutionary merely a mechanism based on existing structures to embedd sharing information in the network protocols in some way or the other, still nice guy  :)

Basing a sharing system on bandwith alone is flawed in my opinion.    On 512/128 Aussie DSL I cannot compete with US and UK based ISPs where huge speeds are possible.

As part of the WinMX community I have been judged I believe by what I share, not how much.   I share things I have that other people may not be able to get.

That is what Community Filesharing is about.   Sharing to the best of your ability.

Otherwise lets just set WinMX up to ban 56k users, and possibly slow DSL speeds like mine, lol.

Very true Mick, when I frst came to mx I was like a kid at the sweetshop with all the marvelous files I could gather, many still enjoy this feeling and take as much as they can of the communities offerings, the amazing thing is no one sufferers in any way whatever any individual consumers appetite, there is always plenty to go around  :D

Quality and quantity will always be a trade off to those who worry about such things but I like to think the whole community has a soft spot for their fellows and feel able to throw even the hardest core leech a file or two to shame them into taking part in the wonderful show of selfless humanity we call file sharing.
