New Computer and DSL - Can't Connect
« on: July 29, 2007, 04:01:50 am »
I have a new computer and I just installed WMX on it today.  It's running Vista HB yet compatibility doesn't seem to be an issue.  I can't connect through my DSL connection, so I was wondering if someone out there knew the settings I need to use since some of this is so greek to me.  I've read post after post here and tried a bunch of things others recommended, obviously nothing worked.

Here's the dirt:

Newest version of WMX/Used Installer Patch/Vista HB/SBC-Yahoo DSL

Windows (xp & vista) come with a built in firewall.. unless you're on something older (which wouldn't quite fit with "new computer" you have a firewall...

There is a good tutorial for setting windows firewall in the tutorials section.. the one for XP service pack 2 is close enogh to cover vista also

Windows Firewall wasn't even on, and yes XP SP2 Firewall tut is almost exactly like Vista, just that the icon is a globe with a brick wall in front (some people need that kind of "hand holding" lol).  Anyway, I shut down Nortons, etc etc, and even fired up the firewall and allowed WMX, just to see if it would work, so far still a blinking yellow light after 30 minutes.  I set things  back the way they were, except firewall is active with WMX allowed.  In settings the IC is set to DSL, Out TCP is set at don't use proxy, In TCP is set at listen 6699, UDP is set at send 6257, Host is at use operating.  Connection tests fail.

Now what?

the router probably has a built in firewall.  i am not familiar with their router  but many new routers have a nat firewall built in.   in order to get through this firewall you have to open ports in the router for win mx to get through.  generally called a virtual server.  i can try to help if you like but i need either a screenshot or a copy of router manual to help open the ports.  once you set up the router you will also have to give the computer a static ip on the home side of the router.

message me if you need my help

Alternatively there are guides for almost all brands of router or modem with router here:

http://portforward.com/routers.htm

They also have instruction on setting up static IP addresses, its only slightly different for Vista from XP.  and if you need help with that just post back here.

I decided to fiddle with WinMX again today.  I found out how to allow WinMX with my router so both firewalls (router and windows) are allowing the program.  But... I'm still getting the yellow light with the connecting message.  All settings with WinMX is set at default.

Ok Wiregirl,

First make sure you have the latest patch installed you can find that here:

 https://patch.winmxconex.com/

Next if it still doesnt connect for you and turn green then go to the XP Firewall, remove WinMX from allowed rules, and then restart, when it asks tell it yes to have access again.  You may find you have to go back in and add your ports to this.

Post back and let me know.
