Is WinMX Network now 'Dead' or just dying???
« on: September 08, 2007, 05:41:54 am »
Hi all, I have been over the years a great WinMX fan but lately I and I suspect many more are finding more and more problems, connecting and getting search returns on the Native WinMX network.   Heaps of search returns on the OpenNap networks but few there on-line or if active have a huge backlog of people waiting for a single peer to peer download.

I run Azureus as a bit torrent client and see over a million users any time of day or night there, but seldom more than 7 or 8 thousand on WinMX.    So is this the end?

I hope not for I can not find the music singles I collect on Bit Torrent, which is fine if you want a whole album, or a DVD for that, but pretty useless if you just want a single by Carl Perkin's released in the mid 1950's.   So what is to be done?   Tried to connect today Saturday and failed, no problems with my ports or internet connection and using the latest patch.   Azureus was working just fine before and after I attempted to use WinMX.   Can rarely connect now as a primary so go on as a secordary user but even then get dumped and still no search results, so what is going on gang?

I say again, is the WinMX network DEAD or just DYING the death of a thousand cuts?
Kind regards,   Tom.

Those 7 or 8 thousand are opennap users and not winmx users.

No one knows the exact number of winmx users. But I doubt if it was really low. Usually it's a few hunderd thousand ...

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

Tower I just wanted to add here that if you can be more specific about what problems your having with WinMX and seaches maybe we can attack this from that angle.
I can tell you that the network in my opinion is settled now with hard core users and sharers and from that I see no reason we cant build it into what it was pre front code leaving.  It is after all one of the best written p2p networks written in its time and Kevins for sight really gave a great framework to not only survive on but to build on.

As for your judging the amount of users by searches, this has one major flaw, when you look at the structure of the network as layed out simply here:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/wpn.html

Search quieries are not global and only make hops to 8 primaries in the network, thats where your results are coming from an 8 primary 'section' of the network.

Now you and I both know there are not just 8 primary users on the network there are thousands of them..

OK Gang, thank you for the replies, even the suggestion to close this thread!   I have found out that the problems I am having are unique to my cable connection via Persona here in Canada and a quck phone call to there excellent service/technical support line cleared the problem and I am very please to say that WinMX is working normally again.   The port I was using had issues with my service provider and a simple port change (they even suggested a range of numbers for me! :D) did the trick.   I am just re indexing my MP3 collectiion having re sampled my original CD collection at higher bit rates to take advantage of the general increase in end user bandwidth(s) around the WinMX World.

Typing in a popular Band, for example 'Police' now gives me hundreds of returns once more.   Oh and for the user who asked, if you connect as a primary user (High Speed always on is best) you will after a while get a report of the number of users on the native WinMX network - I am pleased to say that is also working once more and today reports just under 13,000 users.   Way to go Gang - long live WinMX :D
Kind regards,   Tom.

We are still fighting to keep winmx alive and will continue to do so.

Great one liner James, any facts to back you opinion ?

Whilst its patently obvious user are lost each time we have an emergency the rate of patch downloads from the different sites usually tops thousands per day so I,m sure we are gaining again as we have done previously, as usual patience is required so is hard work to keep the communinty entertained and content, thats where many can do their bit by putting in time to clean up messy file listings weed out crap files and most of all share their material, this simple formula has kept winmx rolling for years now and as most of you know the community is at least between a quarter and half a million users, this figure can be calculated by the amount of requests for the winmx update bar text  hitting the site from different IP,s over a given time period.

Dying?  Hardly

Sorry James, but like Tower I cannot find a torrent for that 1958 Carl Perkins single. I must have fixed WinMx two hundred times down the years and will continue to do so.

yeah, im not here to argue, in that sense, no one can denie that winmx isnt what it used to be, user count has gone down drasically and there isnt many new users joining the network

i beg to differ on winmx being dead, both omega and i host the patches since kms dcma notice to this site.......
on average we supply 500 patches a day, some of these are obviously existing users but we suspect the vast majority are actually new or old users of winmx returning.......
a pessermist would look at a half glass of water and say its half empty were as i prefer to see it as being half full, agreed winmx isnt what it once was but there are signs that it is still growing and at least going in the right direction..........despite the best attempts by a certain person to destroy it, and of course he will fail misserably, he is now just a sad pathetic little boy trapped in a world of hate,im sure the world looks better from the bottom of a vodka bottle........your actions of late are winning you no friends........
once the new patch is released and the patch wars of old are dead winmx can go forward in a much stronger position.............
after all winmx is what you make of it.............
