Throttled?
« on: September 10, 2007, 02:08:16 pm »
Folks, I consistenty see uploads start at 150-200 K/s... carry for about 10 seconds... then drop to 15-25 K/s.
I look back at the Bandwidth screen or my NetMeter logs and see the same thing...
Apparently this happens at all times during the day or night...
I've read the articles on Comcast's latest crapshoot and wonder if I'm affected.
Is there anything I can do? Change ports? Send hate mail? Call and complain? Switch to decaf?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Itsbry,

Honestly Comcast and Cox were some of the first ISPs to use throttling software, both companies did seem to stop this practice for some time, as we have no seen it in a year or better with WinMX, until lately.  I would say that more then likely your definatly affected and the only real cure since they have chnaged from port throttling to packet (meaning they can detect WinMX on any port) is to change ISPs.  You can email them or call and talk to them but expect to be lied to.  There is still a test that will work.

If you have a dial up modem or access to one (easy to install and cheap to get) there are companies that offer you free 10 hours a month dial up service, sign up for one.. test WinMX on that connection.  If the connection holds stead at dial up speeds you know your being throttled and thats proof.  Still wont change your options but at least you can keep the ISP from lying to you about it when you do complain.

^^ Juno free 10 hours a month ^^^

The best advice is to remove your wallet from thier equation and get your service moved if its possible in your area.

Thanks for the response... obviously not what I was hoping to hear. I honestly don't know what else is available here in NE Florida besides cable... I do like the Internet/TV combo thingy, but this whole Boost bull**** and the throttling thing has got me steamed.

Well, for those who start a Dload from me, you can expect to get about 50% and then have the speed drop off. Sorry folks...

Hey I just thought of something...

If I am going to live with Comcast's throttling, should I adjust the bandwidth throttles as well? I used the link to get a recommended number, but if that is based on available bandwidth before the throttling begins then it's got me way off the mark.
Whaddya think?
