Upload problem behind the router
« on: September 24, 2007, 09:06:33 pm »
Hello. I decided to open winmx incoming ports on my home router to my home server. So I did and it become more stable downloads and queue status. But people can't upload nothing from me, always "Timed out waiting for incoming connection". What it can be? I need to open some additional ports or my router doing something wrong?

Opened ports:
TCP 6699 WinMX TCP IN
UDP 6257 WinMX UDP IN

DJ if you could give us the name and model of that router you configured, so that we can check what settings it requires we may be able to give you some advice where to look.  More then likely there is some small error there or a firewall or protective program is still blocking those ports..

Its ZyXEL P330W-EE, wi-fi LAN router. Configured in "Virtual Servers" options to throw ports TCP 6699 and UDP 6257 to my homeserver.

OK kewl,

Well the most common mistake in setting these up is using the correct IP address so what I post here you may be well aware of but i never hurts to double check things this way

Make sure your using the correct IP.
Go to Start > Run > type            cmd
Then say OK
Now in the black box type               ipconfig
Hit Enter

Make a note of the IP Address listed there - Go to the Zyxel and make sure that Local IP Address listed for your port rules matches this IP.
Often we see ppl use either the Gateway IP here or that the IP may have changed on them even, so checking is good..

Also its best if you have two rules, in other words you set one for a port range of TCP 6699 - 6699 and a seperate rule for the UDP 6257 - 6257  rather then forwarding the range like 6257 - 6699.  This leaves too many holes.

If all that is infact correct then the next thing to check are any firewalls, XP and Vista have built in ones and they are in the habit of enabling themselves at times.  Double check that yours is either OFF or that its been configured with the ports as above.  Simply highlght WinMX on the exceptions list and choose Add Port, do this for both ports.

If your still having issues after these post back to me what firewalls or protective software you are using and we'll see what we can find out for you.

Damn dude =) I'm system administrator of small commercial bank, here in Moscow =) Of course I know how to set router and how to use firewall =)
I'm in the provider's subnet and I have "gray" IP address, it means that I behind provider's NAT either. So, if winmx need real IP to listen incoming connections thats understandable.
I didnt opened port range, just set redirect from WAN to my server in LAN, ports that I marked higher in this post.
I should know how winmx server connects to the client, maybe it remembers clients address and then needs to send commands to open ports, and thats why he cant see me behind provider's NAT, so I need to set in winmx that I cant listen incoming TCP and UDP. If so, I'll put that settings back, so people could UL from me.

Sry for maybe bad english, not my primary language =)

add.: my homeserver haven't any firewalls, its behind the upper NAT and my router, I think thats enough of protection from outside. Also SAV installed (Symantec AntiVirus), but its an old version, without any network defense.
