Eric Traut, one of Microsoft's chief operating system design engineers, gave a fascinating demo (WMV) recently at the University of Illinois, where he talked about where the Windows core is going and ended with a sneak peek at the kernel of the next version of Windows, known by the exciting codename of "Windows 7." The demo showed what Windows would look like if it was literally stripped down to the core, showing the kind of work that is going on to optimize the aging NT kernel.

Traut runs a team of about 200 software engineers at Microsoft that is responsible for the core kernel scheduling, memory management, boot sequence, and virtualization technology such as Virtual PC and Virtual Server. The latter technologies are becoming more and more important as servers get more powerful and gain more and more CPU cores, and it was clear from the demonstration that Microsoft is placing significant effort into integrating virtual machine technology into everything that they do. The release of Virtual PC as a free download last year was just the beginning: Windows Server 2008 will ship with significant VM enhancements, and Windows 7 will only carry on from there.

Wow I wouldn't of expected another windows so quickly. Especially when we have only just started to see the services packs for vista.

well... many on this forum (and elsewhere) have called 'windows vista' 'windows me 2' --- and it very much seems like it is... IIRC windows ME didnt last very long either... diehard techs prefered to either use the older win98 or to go straight to the new win2k... of couse that didnt stop microsoft from making money on ME... which.. after all.. isnt that microsofts major goal?

They are making a new one already because they didnt expect to spend so much time on Vista. They wanted to release it like 1.5 years ago. But what have we seen Microsoft do right?

This has actually been in the works for a long time. It was first announced back in 2000 as codename "Windows Blackcomb" to be the successor of Vista (back then still called "Longhorn").
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

And if you want a reason to hate the program early on, here is a YouTube demo of how they originally wanted the desktop and file location system to function.

I don't know if they are still focusing on this same idea since the demo was created back in 1999, but when I first saw this, it made me think of Vista's 3D-ish window panels.

Eh, I've known about this for a while. Can't wait for them to finish with it. It's unlike most new versions of Windows. They pretty much stripped it down big time, it only takes up 25mb disk space so far. The guy says he'd like to get it smaller. He also claims that the kernel has been improved.

Plus he mentions about a lot of people complaining about all the bloat in Vista. This version of windows is going in the complete different direction. It's being built efficiently, unlike that crap OS Vista that uses the hell out of some resources.

He was running it in a VM, and it was still pretty nice on resources. I hope they keep going in the direction they have been, then I may actually ditch XP some day. Just know I'll never be moving to Vista.
