"We remain hopeful with our progress to date, we still have significant work ahead to finalize our analysis and testing processes," he said. "At the end of the day, there's no guarantees."

The One Laptop per Child Foundation, a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, plans to start producing the $188 machines in China next month and eventually manufacture millions a year for elementary school children in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The foundation is also selling the machines in the United States and Canada for $400 apiece through a fund-raising campaign.

The laptops were designed specifically to run Linux programs. If the machines run only Linux, Microsoft will lose an opportunity to expose tens of millions of children worldwide to its Windows system.

Well if they can make this for very little why not put it for every country. In the next 10 years all people willbe required to have lap tops especially for school work.

However it is nice to see microsoft doing the right thing and helping others.
People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success. BY Norman Vincent Peale

...helping others become part of the windows monopoly...

microsoft doesnt 'help' ... they 'sell' ... and the last thing we need is children fighting with malware morso than learning

* SamSeeSam waits to see some fatal flaw in the plan

Typically, the thign that will happen is that the kids will start playing on the comp and well, most kid games these games don't exactly have erm.... well, simple requirements... Not to mention the illeffects of playing too much on the comp, obesity, no fresh air and all of that...

But all the same it will be nice to see if this is indeed successful

Cheers :P
