It seems we are faced once again with a cartel backed peice of legislation that is likely to steal yet more rights from the consumer and hand them to corrupt commercial self interest groups.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080205-white-paper-pro-ip-acts-damage-increases-are-dangerous.htmlLast month, the Copyright Office held a closed-door session on the issue of statutory damages. A small affair, the roundtable was a response to the PRO-IP Act introduced in Congress late last year. In the wake of the meeting, eight public interest and industry groups have published a white paper (PDF) arguing against any changes to the "one work" rule and the increases in statutory damages that would result from such changes.
The white paper, submitted by the Consumer Electronics Association, Public Knowledge, the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Association of Public Television Stations, the Library Copyright Alliance, the Computer & Communications Industry, NetCoalition, and the Printing Industries of America, argues against the kind of changes to the copyright law envisioned in the PRO-IP Act.
I have already posted on this issue once already but we all need to be ready to show our support for the common joes or jolines rights to not be ripped off by the increasingly desperate and dramatic "intellectual-property-trumps-all" brigade that is the cartel and its monopoly supporters such as microsoft.
Remember folks anything you dont defend is ripe for stealing from you in the eyes of the corporate predator, be ready to defend not only your own rights but to safeguard those you expect to let your children enjoy, apathy is your only real enemy, dont let these monopoly seeking organisations steal from you by default.
