Author Topic: Have not been able to commect scince the KM Crisis (Read 2508 times)

- Operating system WinMe
- Internet connection type DSL 512/256 kpbs
- WinMX Version 3.54
- Primary user
- No firewall
- No router
- No WinMX add-ons installed
- No traffic shaping, nor port blocking of any kind from my ISP

I installed the patch on numerous occasions, removed WinMx completely
removed all WinMX files and refs in registry - no joy

I have checked an cleared the host file - Made sure it is not 'read only' and is not locked

I have made sure that WinMX is installed in the default location C:\ program files\WinMX

I installed Setup for Existing Installs of WinMX

It didn't work so uninstalled, cleaned registry.

Currently have reinstalled Install for WInMX v3.54 Patched

In all instances I made sure I was connected to the internet
I restarted the computer after WinMX had done its thing

Checked The host file - no entries were added

Checked the win MX file oledlg.dll was in the folder.

Common in all cases was the failure of the Wetup Wizard to make a connection with the test server it always failed
- Would get the message:

WinMX was unable to make an outgoing TCP connection to test its servers etc etc.

So I go back and do manually

Do you you need to use a proxy --- NO

Can this comp recieve incomming connections from the internet --- YES
TCP port --- 6699

Can this comp recieve and send udp packets --- YES
UDP port --- 6257

Let winmx do its thing for say 2mins restart computer
get the familiar stuck on yellow

WinMX 3.5.4 beta Seeking message

From the pic it would seem that the Patch is not getting installed
What do I do next

Hi shreebon,

The New installers have a bug with 98/ME that causes them not to recognize the patch file in the winmx folder. There fore I have a fairly simple fix for you to try..

There is no need to uninstall or reinstall anything .. simply first download and save this file:
Old Patch Installer

This will start your WinMX for you however, since its the old patch it wont connect.. what it will do however is tell your ME system to look for the patch in the WinMX folder.

Next you reinstall the Set Up For Existing Installs again if you dont already have that saved on your system its direct link is here:
New Patch Set Up For Existing Installs

Run that one next and this should get you fixed right up.. if not post back to us here

Hi Me Here ,
I worked -It was so simple.

As there are a lot winME win9x users still around, it would be pertinent if the bug is fixed, with a patch now or if and when the need for a new patch is needed.
At the the very least this short thread should be made a sticky someonewhere.

that didn't work on my computer, i started getting the error cannot find unicode wrapper unicows.dll

This is a problem we usually see on Win98 systems. The latest updates for Win98 can help solving this also or you can drop this file into the C:\Program Files\WinMX folder and then retry the WinMX

i finally was able to get winmx working on my win98 comp. The subscription for e-trust security suit ran out so i uninsulated it and put kurio personal firewallas well as avg antivirus on this compute. after that i had no more troublewith getting the cannot find unicode wraper error
