Super Fast Wireless Speeds Claimed By Australian Researchers

A research team from OZ are claiming to have developed a finished product offering substantial speed increases in the wireless computing spectrum

he group from NICTA, lead by Gigabit Wireless Project team leader Prof. Stan Skafidas, is claiming to have developed a CMOS-based chip capable of transferring up to 5Gbps at up to 10M—a 25 percent improvement over the WirelessHD specification.

That's a substantial achievement in and of itself, but NICTA's new "GiFi" transmitter is supposedly loaded with a host of other goodies. GiFi is small, at just 5mm per-side (25mm sq.), it's built using CMOS, uses a 1mm antenna, costs less than $10, uses a built-in power amplifier that's only a few microns wide, and draws around 2W of power. That much power consumption means we'll not be seeing GiFi in any mobile devices anytime soon—not unless NICTA can cut the chip's power draw by an order of magnitude—but the rest of the claims made for the nascent standard paint it as the ultimate solution for high-speed, close-range wireless networking

Sounds good to me folks, no doubt some time in the future we shall see faster speeds claimed over longer distances but to be honest its my belief the real limit to these systems will come from enviromentalist groups who will be positioning their opposition on the fact that strong radio fields have long been suspect of causing ailments in humans along with causing personality changes, although as usual I suspect commercial interests will as usual silence any critics as they have done with cellular phones and the location of the asociated support infrastrucure.

that '10M' = miles and not meters right?

Hmm no Stripes, the article makes clear the signal is a local type and very fast within the approximately 33 feet radius.

High speed wireless, cable, or DSL makes no difference. All over the world most peeps can't even enjoy their high speed connections due to fairuse policies, throttling, and packet shaping. Until we start getting what we're paying for highspeed may as well be dialup in a lot of people's cases.
When you wake up each morning always try to remember tomorrow is never your option, it's God's. Love like you want to. Live like you aren't afraid. And ALWAYS try to remember that even if it seems personal it's never as important as something you may have forgotten to do today.

so basically its a useless (cos of the power drain) very short distance gigabit bluetooth (standard bluetooth extends to 300 ft) but i guess its a step... a small step but a step...
