Freenet Project Alpha Test Release
« on: March 03, 2008, 01:31:54 am »
This looks a little bit of fun to test folks :)

Quote
Freenet is a global peer-to-peer network designed to allow users to publish and consume information without fear of censorship. To use it, you must download the Freenet software, available for Windows, Mac, Linux and other operating systems. Your computer will then form part of a global, decentralized P2P network, and you will be able to publish and consume information anonymously, either through your web browser, or through a variety of third party applications, such as Frost (see http://jtcfrost.sf.net/).

Since the first alpha there have been vast numbers of changes, in particular significant improvements in user friendliness. For example, it is no-longer necessary to find other people to connect to, Freenet can find other people for you. However, you can still connect to your friends for maximum security. It is also a good deal faster, and many bugs have been fixed.

There have been many many other changes, and we will release a feature complete beta followed by 0.7.0 itself in the coming months (we hope to have regular point releases after that). But we thought it would be best to get some wider testing at this point. There is more to do before 0.7.0, and one or two features which need to be completed before that.

As many of you know I keep my eye on new projects of interest to p2p users such as the one above , many are not worth reporting due to major flaws or problems but this one is something thats a slow-but-sure future winner, lets hope we see some more good news in the future from this project.

After just running a few tests with this is I had a headach in just shutting the beast down, perhaps folks should hold off from trying it a little longer

Tried it myself and had the same problem..... had to use a third party uninstaller to clear it from my pc... had as many registry keys hanging on in there as a bad dose of norton.
Deffo not reccomended for a novice and is far from the finished article .... perhaps in the future it will be a good programme but for the moment i would give it a miss unless you are a fully competent pc user.... Think i will just wait for future releases then check it out some more.

I've been using Freenet from the early versions of 0.7 and I can say that is amazing how the software evolved. Maybe everyone thinks that Freenet is a tool like BitTorrent, eMule or any filesharing system but it's not. The goal of Freenet is to create a system that can assure anonimity to the users, letting them publish and share files without the dangers of being watched by the big brother (or the entities who represent it). Freenet also have a "paralel" web that works inside freenet, you can publish freesites (like websites but distributed all over the network), link other freesites or link files uploaded to the network.

Can't say anything about the windows installation, in linux runs very well and all the software is contained in his own directory (there aren't files are created in other places).

The start-up, maybe, is a bit slower because you have to read about how Freenet works and behave.

Freenet also have FCP, a high-level protocol to write your own applications (it's easy to use and understand). There are powerfull applications like Frost (a board  system, ala usenet) and Thawn (a file download manager). If you don't like Thawn, the node comes with his own download/upload queue.

Is a very intresting proyect that could end all this "pirate" persecution, cause nobody knows who inserted the data and who retrives it and is open source, so everyone can be part of it. You can take 5 minutes and read, at least, the philosophy page:  newbielink:http://freenetproject.org/philosophy.html [nonactive]

Hi CTP  :)

Welcome to the site and thanks for posting the great wealth of information for winmx folks to read over, I at least was aware of the primary usage of Freenet and have been looking at it and other programs with a technical eye for useful anonymising tips.

Whilst I,m sure its more of a tool for those in lands under government backed censorship regimes I do forsee the time for more folks to take up such tools as many civil liberties are quitely eroded without fanfare globally, once again, my thanks for providing more informaion regarding this interesting program  :D
