Posring from another site Big concerns for us all ???
« on: October 09, 2005, 06:21:02 am »
I'm not necessarily partial to any team, but I am partial to a particular method. After reading this I think my reason will beomce clear.
First, let me start off by saying that I like the idea of the DLL being able to download an updated version of itself as needed. I think
we need to find a way for updates to happen with little or no operator input. However I don't trust a DLL. I have nothing negative to say
about people working on it nor do I have a problem with the idea of a DLL, but I can envision one scenario which would be devastating.
In order to be effective with updates, new versions of the DLL would have to be capable of coming from any of the servers- this much is
self-evident. Here's the scenario I envision as being a problem:
How much can anyone here trust the people running the servers? Would you trust them to turn down an offer of $100,000 USD from the RIAA
to turn over that server to them? How about $250,000 USD? That amount of money is hard for anyone to say "no" to. These groups have deep
pockets, and don't expect them to be above these tactics. For them, hostile takeovers and buying what you want are a way of life.
Now they have control of a server- and none of us would know. They update the DLL- assume they have programmers for hire at least as good
as anyone here- with their own version. This new DLL does two things: first, it's set so that all future queries to the servers are to that
one only. They've gained control of you, and they want to keep it. The server connects you to the WPN as normal, at least for the first few
weeks while they do what their dirty work. Next their revised DLL opens all kinds of back doors for them and the nasty work they want to do to
your system, without you knowing about it. We know for a fact that they believe that they're within their rights to infiltrate any computer system
to look for protected content then have their way with your data. They don't care about any incidental damages that may occur in the process.

is a scare tactic or a possibility ?

This is not a "Scare tactic" its part of a debate from a private forum, is it a possibility, yes ofc it is, all things are a possibility and are open for debate as such. That said this is only part of a private conversation and i am troubled that  "someone" from within this private area see's fit to assist the Riaa and create as much trouble as they can.

To the rat in our midst i say a big hearty FU Riaa scum.........in the nicest possible way ofc.  :D

Its pathetic as well as being wrong on most counts.

I am wondering why you have not posted some of the rest of the conversation that took place there ?

The winmxgroup and pie patchs only come from one single source each, you are all aware of this so any potential third party files are easily spotted as fakes.

The folks who worked on the caches and patches know that kicking the RIAA into touch for shutting down a community is worth much more than gold bricks, and it seems the poster of that crap has no morals in this respect.

We have something that the RIAA cannot control folks and thats TRUST.
The servers are run by our community for our community and every server owner is known and trusted 100%.

What this person who posted this on Vladds seems to ignore is that we actually only speak to the caches for about 2 or 3 seconds and then are connected to the network, and should someone try to hijack the network by pointing the servers to their own folks, there would be none of your favourite chat rooms so you can see how easily any stupidity would be spotted and dealt with.

Ignorance seem to run riot in some places.

unfortunately i have to beg to differ, i do not trust a single person, that is why i am keeping a very close eye on all of the peer caches for anything suspicious, blind trust is not a good idea, especially now.

I expect others are also keeping a close eye on everything I do, I know they are looking at the obvious things (in a very stupid way) but I hope they are actually looking at things in detail, I would not be happy to find I am not being watched closely, as it would show blind faith from them, and that is a sure sign of a fool.

There have already been security breeches on at least one of the peer caches caused by the caches owner being stupid and granting untrusted people full unrestricted access to his server, and only a fool would expect that to not happen again.

The road to HELL is paved with good intentions

In a situation like this, there will always be people that take advantage of others good nature. There is also the chance for sabotage and back stabbing among the ranks. Just remember, the WINMX fandom is comprised of rebels that would rather say "F U" than sell out. When theres a breech in the chain, the experts will jump on it. Until then, we all need to cautiously band together and concentrate on the real enemy.

Does the DLL actually do this?  Update itself without user knowlege and express permission, without option to deny auto-update?

Good to know.  Where did the OP get their bad info?

If it did auto-update without any option to deny that, it would be a serious breach of security.  Glad to know it does not have any forced-update as claimed in the OP.

KM you may not like it but I trust you.

It takes strong willed folks to get things up and running and the pie team also have that sort of guy at the wheel, I,m confident that the servers and those who control them are working for the good of us all.  8)

If not I,ll be the first to cry foul..
