Issues with Wine 0.9.16 on Kubuntu Gutsy?

Hi all

My perfectly stable MX using Wine in Kubuntu Feisty has broken in Gutsy. Just wondered if anyone knew of any issues with this old version of Wine in Gutsy.

MX fires up, connects then silently falls over after a few seconds Suspect it is something specific to me but would appreciate any news of whether anyone else is using Gusty successfully with Wine 0.9.16.

I only upgraded after a major spazz following a powercut messed up my / partition (/home is on a different partition) as I was reinstalling anyway I decided to upgrade. All my other apps I have reinstalled have worked perfectly and seamlessly with my old settings.

I also took the the opportunity to upgrade to the latest WCS Linux version and this tells me I have connection mods in place - I have not changed anything since using the last version, which while prompting me to upgrade worked flawlessly for weeks on end. Strangely, I get the exact same "error" message when I try run WCS on my Win 2003 server now.

BTW WCS-Linux is running even though it told me I would have trouble and people are entering and using the room fine - everyone except me cos my MX is broken WAHH. lol

Have you tried running mx with wine from a terminal window?

That way you should see error messages and this might give you a hint about what the problem might be.
Personally I'm running the ubuntu package for wine0.9.16 on my debian (sid/unstable) without any problems.
Just open a terminal window and start winmx with "wine WinMx.exe" (need to specify the path if you're not actually in the folder winmx is installed in).
That way you should get the error messages.
If it connects as you say it can't be that the .dll override isn't set right so it must be something else.
Just post back with the error message if you can't figure it out and we'll see what it tells us

Regarding the wcs error message:
If I remember correctly wcs detects modified hosts files, so it might also pick up on the fact that the wmw patch temporarily puts in an entry fro the status bar.
As long as everything works fine it can safely be ignored.
 
Btw, which wine package are you running, the one from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html  ?
If not maybe you should try that one

I forgot to mention I tried to get it to run from a terminal without success, don't know what I was thinking, I didn't think to actually open the terminal in the directory first doh. My excuse is that it has been a very long and busy week at work in Windows land lol.

Still a relative n00b to Linux I'm afraid (March this year) so that doesn't mean a helluva lot to me. Gut reaction says possibly video drivers? (nVidia MX440) OOTB Gutsy ones without any tweaks.

Afraid I can't remember where I got the old Wine from. I got as a .deb. It did fall over twice during install using gdebi and installed when I did it in a terminal using dpkg.

I <think> I got it from winehq - on the previous versions area, it has now dropped off the radar there as far as I can see.

BTW, looking at the thread we conversed on before, when I was totally green and trying to get MX to work in the first place and the link you posted above, I am pretty sure now that is where I got the .deb from.

You wrote you kept your /home directory - does that mean you kept the old .wine as well?
If so I'd suggest to do a new setup - you can simply rename that folder to .wine_old  or something.
The .wine folder will be recreated on the next wine startup.
You will then also have to reinstall winmx and mozilla activex control of course, but it might be worth it to get a clean new install in case there are some weird settings in there although I can't image what they would be.
Please be aware that the current patched version from our download page does NOT do the .dll override correctly, you will have to do it yourself.
For the override settings - and several other wine settings btw - you can use the wine config utility, simply start it from console by typing   winecfg
