Winmx and Dropped pckets
« on: April 25, 2008, 06:29:55 pm »
Hi, just wondering if there is anyone that would know why my router seems to be dropping quite a few packet on the winmx network??
I used to be able to let the program run for a about a week before becoming unstable and now it seems like I'm lucky if it is a day.
I do have a USRobotics 8054 that I didn't used to have and ports are forwarded in virtual server and firewall settings.
I do need to restart the modem every once in a while which cause me to lose secondaries but then time outs seem to disappear for a while.
I am getting a lot of "default deny" dropped packets though.  And this seems like since it is default deny that something is not set right or is this just a normal occurrence.

Thanks in advance!

hello nate

First of all i would visit the site ive just pasted below, it is walk threw for setting up your router to work with winmx

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/USRobotics/USR8054/WinMX.htm

Also routers are notorious for not always being very good at handling alot of concurrent tcp/udp connections. The difference in what a router can handle from make to make is quite dramatic. It may just be that your router is not suited for running a primary  connection,

Id also try redoing any firewall rules you may have already set, including windows firewall it has a tendency to be crap and forget its name and ports even if it was switched on(*sarcasm* lol)

Also check if their is a firmware update for your router, i have in the past had issues with net gear routers and they are quick are releasing newer firmwares their than ive seen from any other company, it may be that us robotics have released one for yours an is due a update.

Few things for you too look over their and if you still having problems post back :-D

Yeh no new frmware for a while and I doubt there will be.  All ports are forwarded like I said and I've always used portforward to get an idea of what is going on.
Usually get the same results whether windows firewall is disabled or enabled but I'll play around and try a few things.

Things don't do too bad as I top out around 30.000 spm and most of the times as long as I just kicked on everything is fine.  It's only after a while and I actually think it may be someone hooked up to a bad primary somewhere ellse maybe, but it seems the timeouts group together or are the same user??   I haven't use the network in a while though.

Just may have to mark it up as a POS wireless router.
