Winmx Coding website
« on: October 08, 2007, 01:22:29 pm »
After a little thought an wondering and a few ideas i have set up a Winmx coding forum.

Their isnt really a place i know of that people can congregate and openly disscuss aspects of winmx code and i think it would be a great
benefit to have a static place for information, also might stear some energetic coding folks into having a bash.

Please bare with, its only just gone online and i will add stuff  as i go along, if you can please help me as much asyou can by adding your own examples of others that you know, including links to sites with intresting snippets that might be usefull.

So yes, please enjoy my hospitality and role on a winmx revolution

suppose i best not forget the link lol  http://winmx-remastered.ath.cx

Any questions please fire away either here or over at the site, the areas that you can see are guest postable.

Small update to this topc :

After Tiny had some web problems I decided to shift most of the site content to a new sub domain here where it could be managed a little easier, atm its invite only to ensure the programmers are not having to answer simple questions we could answer here and also providing a sort of think tank area for them, it seems they are a little slow in discussing much but I,m confident it will pick up when we have more content and actual projects to discuss, it is serving a great job as an WPN information reference at the moment, but we could do with more interested and knowledgable folks.

If you have coding experience you could be eligible to join and help put something back into the community, this is not a short term project so you will not be required to do anything except take part and help when and if  you can with your relevant skills or knowledge.

Please PM me if you would like to join this specialist R & D group and have an interest in keeping WinMx alive and healthy, Cheers folks  8)

I have to say, that as an open site, many more people would have been approving of it...

as a members only site now, after so many have contributed.....?

that doesn't look too good.

I would reconsider that, even if for the point of showing good intention to the community.
Nothing gives more reason to be suspicious than "eligibility" and "members only" standards.

No offense, but that could give a lot of people ammo in their attempts to say there is a hidden agenda, and it certainly doesn't go well with the before mentioned claims of open source.

Scyre you have previously made your anti-winmxworld credentials clear, for that reason I have no time to indulge myself in defending a sensible decision to try to filter out some of the more "unruly" elements from obtaining access to potentially problem causing material, each person asking for access has been given it openly after a cursory check of their credentials and previous responsible conduct, if you dont trust folks here thats a cross for you to bear, not myself.

Feel free of course to set up your own site with your own material, leading by example is I feel always superior to critisizing others, I myself would like to hear from anyone who contributed to helping me write all the sites reference material, perhaps they could write some more

Just so no one else is mislead into a paranoid conspiracy theory put about by a small group who regularly launch into personal attacks aimed at this site and its operators I would like to make clear the "hidden" agenda, it is simply to generate as much reference material as is possible to create a knowledge base for programmers to short circuit some of the learning curve involved in building new programs for the winmx community, this is I think a laudable aim with many potential benefits, we are all familiar with the old adage of "why reinvent the wheel", in this case its purely a matter of winmx survival, we need more developers of all flavours and this was seen as the preffered way to generate and provide knowledge for their use, we have seen how relying on a single person always ends in failure, this site spreads the seeds required to grow more talent and in turn more potential winmx community programmers.

No group here.

Just a sole individual.

And I am not aiming to launch occasional anti wmw attacks. Don't be so foolish to dismiss the truth I am saying. Doesn't matter how I feel about you, or how you feel about me. Irrelevant.

I am merely pointing out the crosstalk of saying "we need this to be available for winmx's survival" and then saying "it is only available to a select few" when you went on and on about open source when all this began... How open is it, if you are keeping it secreted away for ONLY the people you deem good enough?

Didn't you just post "we have seen how relying on a single person always ends in failure"  <----
Then quit trying to be that one person. Winmx doesn't belong to you, and MANY people have contributed over the years. I think it is insulting to all of those people for you to act in this manner, and think that you owe EVERYONE in the community access to "as much reference material as is possible to create a knowledge base for programmers to short circuit some of the learning curve involved in building new programs for the winmx community" as you put it.

Sorry if stating my opinion somehow equates to being 'anti-WMW' or any other lable you want to put on me. I was trying to very politely mention the negative impact you could have from this, and possibly you could reconsider your stance on it. I guess I should have known better, and expected the arrogant posturing you are so famous for.

But at least you made your point. You are a FINE example of why one person should not have the say so over winmx.

The facts are simple from where I sit, I do my best for the community and they tell me what that best needs to be to maintain their support, that bond of trust extends to allowing me an amount of scope to manage vital projects that are too important to screw up

Can you tell me Scyre what you believe the development area consists of ?
You see I do my own work there and make my own articles, they are once again based on my own research, who are these other contributors you talk of ?
Also what exactly do you think I owe people and why ?  Please make your reasoning on this clear, I,m all for giving help and resources to those who require them as I have been doing for some time now and wise enough to allow others to help make the call not to where necessary, you simply are speaking as an uninformed voice from outside the group of users who utilise the site

I have made no secret of the fact that for the time being I deem it beneficial to restrict the membership, that is my choice and I have made it, the reasons are really a matter of experience and prospective outlook, I believe I made the point in a previous post about this so it has been no secret that I would prefer the programmers to direct the initial building of the knowledge base and agree on important principals on what does and does not constitute an informational hazzard, this is after all a work in progress, I ask you to simply respect my call on this and allow time for the site to mature a little, plucking the fruit too early can ruin the best produce.

I know you made no secret of keeping that area a secret.

That is my point. I thought it was a good move when Tiny decided to open a public site for such efforts, but I think it is moving in the wrong direction when you change the idea to drop a security check point at the door to it. As for the other contributors, I am referring to the others who posted on Tiny's site with what they also had to offer.

I don't think you have anything sinister going on with it GS. My point is that many will see it that way though. And I am not so sure that I myself can see a good reason to keep it members-only if it is all towards an open source goal anyway.

But, as you say, it is your call. I can accept that. I hope that something good for the community emerges from there, truly.

I have not included anyones work from Tinys site unfortunately, It was my hope the programmers would repost as I invited them all to the new site, although most have stated I can use their "content" for the beneft of the community.

The real underlying problem is one of trust and responsibility for open sourcing a client or other major project in the long run, to go ahead and lay out the crown jewels of mx for all to see unfortunately will involve some future problems, to not lay our enough to get folks on the right path will mean stagnation and frustration of those wanting to put something back into the community.

I recognise these two conflicting aims and have been picking folks brains and doing a lot of thinking myself to in an attempt to square this circle, the current aim is to help the programmers with as much information as they require to build what they choose to and supplement that with fresh research should it be required..

When a client arrives we can look at ways to make small changes to ensure any current potential problems are no longer likely to be so, this is I think acting responsibly, both Bearded and KM would doubtless be here critisizing  any open src action that did not take into account potential problems for existing users, you saw the fighting over just releasing a few lines of the protocol for a dll patch.

I think we need to reach some sort of operational parity with the existing client before changes can be made so for now I prefer to accept the responsibility of protecting our assets, I have done the best job I can in contacting all potential user of the core site who would benefit from extra input and asked them to sign up to be able to read the information there, also some very trusted users have access for purely educational requirements, it most certainly is not a sealed domain.

I cannot be responsible for those who think bad of everyones actions, and I will not deal with such people, mistrust spreads faster than a rotten apple if you let it take hold.

Now THAT'S the kind of answers I used to get from you :)

Thank you for the time in posting that. I believe that not only do I have a better understanding of where you are at with things, but many others will benefit from that post as well.

Very sound reasoning, and I can certainly understand some of the concerns you have.

Best Regards, and Be Good

Just a small note here to Core site users, atm the site has been shifted to another server and is not operational but none the less I will be bring the information here instead of keeping it seperate, this is because it seems vital info is not being read and iIm sure more feedabck can be gained by placing the info in a place where its likely to be more easily read.

Memebrs of Core will notice the new section over the next 72 hours as its rebuilt a third time  :)

Thanks for listening

Just a note to confirm the majority of the Core is resident at its new location and "third time lucky" will be improved on as fast as possible, if your a Core member and cant see the section please drop me a PM as the database with the members list hit the dirt when we lost the server and much has had to be rebuilt, lets hope this is the last time we have any such problems

Cheers folks.
