File Sharing Problem
« on: November 01, 2005, 04:16:41 am »
I have recently installed the patch and got my WinMX up and running again (thanks to the people who deserve it). but I have noticed that when I try to share some files some of them wont show up on the shared files screen. to make it more clear I have a folder that I want to share that has mp3's and jpg. files in it. When I click to share that folder only the jpg. files show up when I expand the folder on my Shared files screen. I hope this all makes sense and I hope sombody can help me . Thanks in advance

This is a feature of WinMX that can be a help or a hindrance Cabo, you will need to go to the Library button top left and simply right click on the folder that you have shared this will give you a menu called Filetypes where you can add a tick for MP3,s.

This is the new system used in 3.54 , the older versions featured a shared file types button on the shared files page (leads to the same place as the new libary does   )

I hope this helps you  :)

Did you try refreshing the list with the refresh all button and can you confirm for me which version your running please  :)

There is another way to the same menu in 3.54 and that is through the settings then select library from the list on the left, perhaps there is an option there we have missed.

I'm using v3.53 and one thing I noticed when I click Refresh and the little "Rebuilding Library" popup pops up I can see it adding the files I speak of but still they dont show up on my Shared files list when its done rebuilding.

cabo_wabo_24,

I was just wondering if these files might have been ripped with a Windows Media Player by chance.

Although they play as mp3s, they actually have a file extention of .wma,

Winmx wont share .wma files be default for a good reason.  Windows Media Player includes personal information about the computer they were ripped to originally.  This information is usually imbedded into the tracks and not visible to all, but those in the know have no trouble locating it.

If they are .wma files, my best advice is to re-rip them using a free ripping program.  This will put them in to mp3 file format.  Cdex is a great free ripping program, you can find it here:
Cdex Free Ripping Program

The other option if you wish to share these is to go to your WinMX  Shared files screen and choose File Types there you will have to add the *.wma format and then click ok, and refresh.

Let me know if this still didnt fix this for you.

Actually No they are not ripped . I downloaded them off of www.PyroMusic.net they are a Australian heavy metal website that are giving away free music downloads to get exposure to the bands on the compilation (I'm not trying to plug the site but hey free music is free music) the website address is http://www.pyromusic.net/aussie_metal_compilation_1_assets/aussie_metal_compilation_1_download.html
if anybody is interested. but back to the subject. I looked at the file extention and they are mp3's althought when I downloaded them they were zipped up I wonder if that would have anything to do with it ?

Feel free to add any links to bands that would like exposure and allow folks to get the music via download to try them out!!   :D  :D

I am going to download these myself now and test sharing them to let you know what I find out and thanks again for the link!!

Okay I have downloaded the above mentioned tracks and see that when you unpack these there are a few folders and several files unpacked with it.

Try this for me, make a specific folder for these, add the artwork and tracks you want to share.  Then try adding that folder for sharing and see if this helps,

I am sharing them now fine and i suspect tho that the settings are not allowing you to share a sub folder.

I think its worth a mention that although these are offered on that site free to download and burn to cd, they do contain DRM..   :?

Not a bad sound though, and again we do want to support artists that want to make their own way in this world without having to conform the the RIAAs standards of what good music is, or be ripped off of their rights to their own work  :!:

yes I've already done that when I downloaded about a month or so ago I created a new folder in my "My Music" folder then I extracted the mp3's and some cover art jpg's to this folder this was all done before I got WinMx up and running again with the new patch. So when I did finally discovered the Patch I installed it and proceeded to try and share these files. the file path shows up on the Shared files screen but there is nothing in it but the jpg's so I removed the jpg's, refreshed and still nothing.
The file path is C:\My Documents\My Music\Pyro Music - Aussie Metal Compilation Volume 1   if that helps any. this is pretty much how I store my music I try to keep everything organized in my "My Music" folder with every compilation in it's own subfolder

the simplest explaination of Digital Rights Management is: something that removes your right to manage your digital files :-)
