Search duration & multiple searches?
« on: July 09, 2009, 02:55:59 am »
When a Search is launched, does that window keep searching until it is Stopped or Closed?

It would be nice if the Search remained active in case a user comes on line that has the item I'm Searching for, in their Shared File.

If a second search is started in a new window, does the first search window continue searching, or does the second search window cancel the first search window?

All search windows continue to search until the query is complete. To refresh this you need to click the search button again.
If you have multiple searches going on then well... you have multiple searches one doesnt stop for the other.

it would be nice if we had the sourcecode to winmx to make those changes.

Just to confirm, as long as the search term has been entered and searched for the client will continue searching on your behalf at regular intervals until you either press the "stop" button or the "close" button, each search is independant of each other.

Since there seemed to be just a bit of conflict in those two answers (BTW - thanks for responding), please confirm that my understanding is correct.

1. A Search / Query never completes - the Search client re-initiates the Search argument at regular intervals until the Search Window is Closed or the Search is Stopped by the user, regardless of how long the Search Window is left open.

2. Multiple Search Windows can be initiated and left running ad-infinitum (theoretically).

Did I get it right?  (I know, I know, I'm being picky.)

Thanks again.

You have it right , the method used to expire redundant/old searches is built into the protocol so refreshes are necessary at regular intervals and if your a secondary the primary is the one doing the searching, that's why I mentioned the important window closing aspect as either closing the window or pressing the "stop" button generates a "stop searching" message to the primary.

You may operate multiple search windows up to a certain fixed limit the WinMX client has although its advised that you open no more than 3 or 4 at a time for bandwidth and threading efficiency.

I hope that clears up your remaining queries Just4fun
