WINMX no longer connects to network
« on: January 10, 2008, 09:00:47 pm »
Hi, I've been a happy WinMx user for about 3 years now & am sure I have all the lastest patches.
However, every time I try to log in, I can't connect to the network & get stuck at the log in screen with the yellow flashing light.
I've tried to uninstall WinMx & then reinstall the version with the patch, but to no joy.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated
Stellafella  :(

Apologies, I should have said. I'm using Windows XP Pro(SP2) and am running a Comodo Firewall Pro with AVG Free edition for my antivirus. If you'd like any more system information, please let me know.

Hi StellaFella, you didn't state whose patch you were running so I will firstly give you the site to download the WinMxWorld patch incase you are using another.    https://patch.winmxconex.com     Please exit Winmx completely when installing this patch.
If you are using the WMW patch already and are trying to connect primary, try connecting secondary instead, see if that works and visa versa  Failing that please check that your firewall is set to accept Winmx.  If this does not resolve it please let us know.
Could you also tell us which ISP you are using please as some are blocking access to Winmx.

Good Luck

Try running winmx with comodo turned off and see if it connects as i have seen instances of people allowing progs with this firewall & it was still blocking them..... it does seem a little eager to block things at times ......something not so great when using p2p progs

Hi, I've updated the patch ( I think I already had it , but wanted to be sure) and have tried running WinMX with my firewall turned off. I've also tried connecting with both Primary & Secondary connections. I still can't get past the yellow flashing network screen.
I've put my firewall back on & have ensured winmx is in a trusted application. I've then looked at my traffic & some traffic is getting through. The Firewall reports that its listening on Port 6699 and there are outgoing UDP & TCP packets being allowed. Theres nothing incoming though.
Does this help ???  - should i try different ports?

Oh & lastly, I'm with Homecall for my ISP , this has recently been taken over by Pipex.

Thanks
Steve

Windows Firewall has a habit of turning itself back on after windows updates. You could check to make sure
windows firewall is off.... no use having windows firewall running since u already have 1 anyways.

Nope, windows firewall is completely off, so it can't be that. Could it be I should be using different ports - it was working fine up until about 2 weeks ago???
Thanks

It definately wouldnt hurt to try.... maybe go higher like:    56699   TCP   and   56257  UDP
or get away from 6699 and 6257 completely and choose your own random numbers

I used to be a pipex user myself Stellafella & up until about a year ago they was fine to use with winmx then i had all sorts of problems myself connecting..... i contacted them and they told me eventually after several bullshit attempts at palming me off with other excuses that they do block some p2p traffic in the end i could only connect at certain times and even then it was throttled pretty bad..... also i saw that pipex were one of the isp,s that were going to introduce traffic blocking software for p2p so perhaps when they bought out homecall they have introduced this.

Something that often worked for me when connections got bad and i used to phone them & have a rant then mysteriously winmx started working much better for a while...... in the end though i gave up and went elsewhere because all pipex ever do is lie and rip off there customers then lie some more..... you only have to do a search of the net using the term pipex & p2p to see thousands of complaints

I'll have a go at Pipex to see if I get any joy. In the meantime, do you have any details of WinMx friendly ports I could use?
Thanks

if u r using a router check ur ip number as from time to time the last number can change eg - - -* - - -*- - -*100  to - - -* - - -*- - -*101 if it has u would need to change it in ur router, this used to happen to me until i set up a static ip     worth a try :)

I've just upgraded to broadband and now I'm suffering from flashing yellows.

Win 98 SE winMX 3.53 winmxgroup patch applied.

BTHomeHub ports forwarded and that's what my Hub tells me...

Win MX

Game or Application Definition

A game or application is made of one or more TCP/UDP port ranges. Each incoming port range can be translated into a different internal (local network) port range. Port ranges can be statically assigned to devices or dynamically assigned using an outgoing trigger.

Protocol   Port Range   Translate To ...   Trigger Protocol   Trigger Port

TCP   6699 - 6699   6699 - 6699   -   -

UDP   6257 - 6257   6257 - 6257   -   -

What do I do next?

Hi jcanth

First thing i recommend is to udate that patch on the off chance you do have the WinMXGroup release its had to be modified for new caches and its worth trying.

First thing tho sinse your on 98se there was a small bug with the installer for this version so Im going to ask you to run two files for me, Install them both in the order i tell you and then post back and let us know if your still flashing yellow.

First one is here:
httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/KingMacro/WinMX%20Connection%20Fix/Install-3.0-noMX.exe

Download that one, run it to install it, it wont connect because its an older version of patch however, it will set a registry entry correctly for your 98se.

Next get this one and install:
 https://patch.winmxconex.com/3.0mod3-Patch-Only-Setup.exe

Again download and install this one should get you a green light, if not post back

That was great! The second patch didn't quit and just hung at the end (I tried it twice just to make sure). But I quit it manually and started WinMX. Instant green.

Just FYI, I started the portforwarding thing with BT Home Hub, and got half way through, then I saw that it had a list of applications for which you could choose to set up on the router. Win MX was already on there. Is an ISP helping set up peer to peer aps?

Strange one that i use BT Home hub & it was not on mine to start with... i suspect that when you was setting up it loaded to the list auto & that is why it is there.
Anyway great to see you are up and running.
