Uk Lawyer To Close Down P2p Lawsuits Plan After Bad Press
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:59:52 am »
Its seems one of the legal "ambulance chasers" who harass and intimidate torrent filesharers into paying a "settlement fee" for alleged copyright infringement in the UK has pulled out of the scheme after being bombarded with bad publicity.

Quote
Early last month Tilly Bailey & Irvine LLP (TBI Solicitors) became the 3rd UK law firm to try and make a go of threatening suspected illegal file-sharers with legal action unless they agree to pay a small fine to settle out of court. As one example, it was demanding people pay £700 in compensation ($1,000 USD) for illegally file-sharing pornographic material copyrighted by Golden Eye (International).

However, in an unexpected about face, TBI has decided to discontinue the practice for fear the bad press could jeopardize other areas of its practice.“We have been surprised and disappointed at the amount of adverse publicity that our firm has attracted in relation to this work and the extra time and resources that have been required to deal solely with this issue, we are concerned that the adverse publicity could affect other areas of our practice and therefore following discussions with our clients, we have reluctantly agreed that we will cease sending out further letters of claim.

The change of heart was surely due in part to efforts by Which?, the UK consumer watchdog that asked the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), the body which regulates lawyers in the country, to investigate TBI’s conduct.

Another piece of great news for filesharers, although as I should mention this scheme was targeting bit-Torrent users, we should always stand shoulder to shoulder when we are collectively attacked in this way, good news for all filesharers then  :-D
