TCP and UDP ports on "hybrid" internet connection

I have a "hybrid" internet connection that sends over a dial-up but recieves over satelite dish (@400k).  WinMx is only connecting through the dial-up for sending and recieving.  I had to configure my dial-up through Internet Explorer to automatically configure script with a local host address.  How do I configure WinMx to use my broadband for downloading?

Sorry for the delay in reply but we had to do a bit of research on this problem of yours ourselves, interesting reading.

From what I gather there are two satellite services available from providers.

One is the Hybrid you speak of  and one is more of a total satellite package.

You will probably need to contact your provider directly to confirm if the total satellite package is available to you or possibly already installed for your system.

If its already installed then I would suggest to call them and have them help you set it up so that downloads are from the satellite as well, however if you are asked to pay extra I would not advice it.  
From what I have read it wont exactly increase your speeds enough to warrent the extra money.  Typically from  the 400kbps you have now to 500kbps with an upgrade.

I called my satelite provider, and he tells me that ALL downloads over the internet should go through the satelite.  He is wrong and insists that the problem is in my configuration of WinMx.  
   
My problem is that WinMx is downloading through the 28.8k dial-up side of a hybrid connection that should send over dial-up, but download through my 400kbps satelite dish.

Okay as I mentioned this is sorta a new issue for me so please forgive my ignorance on this..

Would you be so kind as to give me some info...

What is it about WinMX that makes you think or tells you that its going through the dial-up connection.  Settings or actual speeds your getting.

Also what are your bandwidth settings, and are you priamary or secondary on WinMX.

I am connecting on a secondary connection.  My Downloads run about 2.8k and my bandwidth throttles are not set.  I know it is DLing through the dial-up side because I can see the "Bytes Recieved" increasing in my network status for Dial-Up Connection while it stays the same on Broadband Connection.  All other programs on my computer DL through broadband except WinMx.  I tried turning off Windows Firewall, Norton Anti-Virus and Microsoft AnitSpyware thinking one of them could be blocking it.  It still connects solely through dial-up.  My Satelite provider tech guy says everything should recieve through sat regardless of settings or anti-hacker stuff.

I am with you now sorta, I see what your saying, but I agree with the tech guy..(cant believe I just said that)... :shock: It should be going through the broadband, But obviously from what your saying its not.

There is not a switch per say in the WinMX settings that will set it to a dial up connection or broadband.  WinMX uses the available internet connection with through ports that you specify.  This would seem to indicate that its a network settings on the machine itself.
So Let me do some more checking on what settings will or will not effect this and see what I can find.

One last question, Do you have a router also?

My satelite comes into the comp via PCI card and does not have a router.  It is listed in network connections as a LAN.  I am running Windows XP.  Let me know if you need any more info.

I am getting lots of information on the way this service works but not finding any solutions to your particular problem.  In these cases I prefer to go to the source.

Can you tell me the name of your internet service provider please.
I think I need to contact them directly and ask them some questions specific to the service they offer and how to set up a VPN properly for you.

Skyway USA is the provider.  866-697-5992 ext 222 is tech support.  I have been talking to a guy named Mark.  I'm finding that only programs run through Internet Explorer are on broadband.  Maybe it's something in my internet settings.

Maybe you could have a look at your connection settings in IE to get a clue what you might need to change?

The only change made to connection settings is "Use Automatic Configuration Script"  with this address "http://localhost:9201"

That means it's using a mini webserver type program on port 9201 to push a config script to IE. These scripts normally set a proxy for IE, but not always.  You are going to need to find out what the script does and see if you can implement it in WinMX.

Either that or localhost 9201 is itself a proxy type program. Try set WinMX  <Internet Connection><Outgoing TCP connection> to use a socks4 proxy on localhost:9201.

I tried running a proxy on socks 4 and 5 with localhost: 9201.   WinMx won't connect at all then.  I tried it as "localhost: 9201", and I tried it as "http://localhost 9201"

enter http://localhost:9201/ in to your web browser and see what is there, it should be a config file with proxy servers listed in it...

I copied and pasted the localhost adddress from my IE settings to WinMx and I tried it with the slash at the end of the address.  WinMx will not connect at all with this proxy setting in socks 4 or socks 5.
