The Gnutella-based download client LimeWire has ceased all its operations after a U.S. federal judge granted a request from the RIAA. Limewire was ordered to disable all functionalities in the current application to prevent users from sharing copyrighted material. The verdict is expected to have an unprecedented impact on the P2P file-sharing landscape.

send the word to your once limewire using friends.... lesse if this makes the WPN any bigger ;)

This is the predictable end of a very predictable court case, in essence it seems to send the message that in the US p2p development is illegal and those who dare to develop without handing over their tech to the media mafia can expect to have to do battle with corporate luddites.

It's a sad day for many users to see this name go but the fact of the matter is that the network will live on under the guise of the many open src clients out there and thus while maybe this is a headline grabber for the media giants as a show of muscle flexing, the reality is it will have little to no impact on the gnutella network or its operation.

LimeWire Shuts Down - Injunction Ordered
Quote
LimeWire, once the pinnacle of P2P file-sharing under the flag of Gnutella, is under a court order to stop distributing its software. About an hour ago, the website became inaccessible, with the following message splashed across its home page:

"This is an official notice that LimeWire is under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software. Downloading or sharing copyrighted content without authorization is illegal.
RIP LimeWire. Long live FrostWire.
