Hard Drive Question
« on: November 21, 2005, 02:23:24 am »
Hello, I am debating whether or not to get a sata pci controller and an sata hard drive or just get a eide hard drive. Any suggestions?

I would also like to know, if I have an eide controller on my motherboard and install a sata controller can I have 4 hard drives in the same computer? What if I install 2 sata controllers, can I have 6 hard drives? Is running raid 0 a bad idea?

SATA with the controller is faster, but more complex to set up, moving windows on to such a drive, to see the maximum benefit from it, involves alterations to boot order & installation of drivers (typically during windows setup).

Raid 0 is a tradeoff, increased speed versus reliability, 2 drives twice the chance of failure, you'll see an increase in performance (marked) but backups become more important, some manufacturers do drives specifically made for RAID use, they tend to be engineered to a higher standard, it's worth looking for them if you're going this route.

Subject to your power supply inside PC being able to handle it you can have multiple controllers & hang drives off all of them, setup becomes a little more involved, especially if they're the same make, SATA controllers which will handle 4 drives rather than 2 also exist & may be more cost-effective than 2 two channel cards.

Be aware that as well as increased power requirements, hard drives generate heat, you may have to upgrade the cooling inside your pc when adding a load.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.
