WinMX Patch
« on: November 15, 2005, 01:27:38 am »
Can someone pls. help me? I have 2 PC's...one running Windows 98SE and today I loaded the patch to fix WinMX, it worked just fine, now I keep trying to load it on my new PC running Windows XP SP2 and it keep stopping before the download is complete, it is stopping around 168 or so...it just won't let it load all 1.35 mbs. I even tried emailing the exe file from the old PC to this new one...but my ISP stopped it because it was a exe. file. I am no PC wizard at all, know very little. So if anyone can help me in terms I might understand, pls do.
I hope I am posting this right, first time here.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Hi Katwoman, your not alone in this problem as I have seen it myself when reconnecting a few friends, what I often do is redownload it and say yes to overwriting the older
(half downloaded version) and that seems to fix the problem.

I will be talking to the tech guy to see if theres anything we can do this end to help users experiencing the same problem.
The file you have already can be zipped and sent to yourself on MSN if that helps as the new MSN is rather annoying with its exe blocking feature.

You may need to select the XP (NT) version rather than the 98 (Win9x) one in setup although it should detect this automatically.

Again, sorry for the problems you are experiencing and I hope the simple soloution works for you as well as it did for me  :)

Hi GhostShip,

Thank U for your advice. I have tried what U said, I downloaded it about 12 times, thinking maybe 1 of the times it would work as it had on my old PC. It never lets me get to the place U mentioned to even say yes and overwrite the older version. It just stops downloading. I guess I just lucked out the first time on the old PC, but I wish I had gotten it to work on the new one first. Murphy's Law..LOL  I am on dial-up so when I tried emailing it back to myself it took forever and then my ISP said No...I about died.
I will keep checking back to see if U find anything else out. I do appreciate U trying to help alot.

Thanks Again,
Katwoman

Katwoman hi,

There is another way to get this working for you.
One of the reasons that the download is so big is that it includes two versions of WinMX and Two patches.

Obviously your one machine wouldnt require both so ..here are the links to  the peices you need on the XP machine.

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/ws2_32.dll
This is the Patch itself, goes into your C:\Program Files\WinMX folder.

https://www.winmxworld.com/files/original_hosts_file.zip
This is a link to an original hosts file if you ever replaced yours with a hosts file patch.  (if you have never patched your winmx on this machine this wont be necessary)
This file goes in your C:\Windows\system 32\drivers\etc folder if you need it, unzipped of course.

httpss://archive.winmxworld.com/WinMX/Beta/winmx354beta4.zip
This is a link to the WinMX Version 3.54 beta 4, its an upgrade from the one that is on your 98 System, and its up to you, we recommend this but if you have WinMX 3.53 already installed on you XP machine this is fine also.

Hope these help get you fixed up just let us know if you still have problems or questions ..

Hi Me Here,

How can I thank U? I just read your post and did add the dll file and it worked! I am so excited!  :) I checked and on my new PC with Windows XP I have Version 3.53, do I need to update it or just leave it now that it is working? And I am not sure what Version I have on my old PC, as I don't have it on right now. Right now, I am on dial-up still, but on Wednesday I am getting cable and that will make having WinMX back up and running just wonderful. I am so glad I found this forum and U took the time to help me.

   Thanks Again So Very Much,
   Katwoman

Excellent Katwoman !!   :D

No you dont need to upgrade at this time, sounds like everything is fine.  The pc that has 98 installed will need to keep the 3.53 version for now. So all you have to do now is get that cable and if you need help with settings let us know ..

Hi Me Here,

Okay, U said when I got cable come back...LOL...well here I am. Got it put in late this afternoon. So of course, first thing I am trying is WinMX...I am not sure if I need to change any settings. I am connecting okay and it is searching okay and even trying to download okay..problem is this, it either sets there and says incoming connection then turns red or when it does start to load, it is taking forever...I mean as long as the dial-up did...like 0.62 slowest I have seen to only 10.43 for fastest. I know it should be loading much faster than this, my friend has DSL and her speed is usually somewhere around 30 to 40 something. What do I need to do. I hope I have explained this okay. If not, bear with this newbie. :) I know something is wrong, it is just too slow, just not sure where to start. All advice appreciated.

   Thanks,
   Katwoman

Okay Kat congrats on getting the Cable connections, lets see if we can help you increase your speeds a bit.

Much of this is going to depend on who you are uploading or downloading to also, bare that in mind.

The first step is to make sure you bandwidth throttles are set correctly.
In WinMX Settings > Bandwidth Throttle >  Make sure your Incoming is NOT ticked to limit.

The Outgoing can be limited and might help you increase speeds for the correct settings close everything except WinMX and visit this page for a test:

https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/

When that finishes it will also help you to make the needed changes according to the results of the speed tests.

If your running on a primary connection then check your Allocated Bandwidth also.  This can be found in WinMX Settings > WinMX Peer Network > Allocated Bandwidth.
Normally this is set to 7 KB/s IN and 9 KB/s OUT
Raising this to around 9 or 10 KB/s In should help to increase your speeds also.

Give those a try and let me know how that works for you ...

Sorry it has taken me days to reply back to U. That cable I was so proud to finally get, went out the next day and was out all weekend, boy was I not happy. Anyway, it is up again, for now....and I am just now getting back online to check mail and check on my WinMx and thank U so much for telling me what all I need to check and/or change on my setting. I will go check that out now. I thought I had registered when I posted the first time, so I spent 20 minutes trying to log in, only to find, guess I didn't the first time, so now I did, I am now registered. Thank U again for the advice.

Thanks So Much,
Katwoman

Hello,

Well I am just checking in. Thank U so much for your welcome to the forum. I changed the setting for outgoing to what it said to put them at. For the most part, I haven't really noticed that much of change. On a few, it flew, so I think U are right, just depends on the song. I have a question, I am running on a secondary because when I change it to primary it doesn't seem to bring up hardly anything. Is this where I should have it set? Also, I had the strangest thing happen, that has never happened before...I have spent 2 days looking for this one artist song and it will pull up thousands...in fact, I have to just stop it...but the times are all like around an hour showing and when I try them, they are all messed up copies...I have loaded like probably 20. What is happening with this? Just have never seen this before. Here I am again...LOL...full of questions. I'll get it all down sometimes. Thanks for all your help, U're great.

    Have A Wonderful Day,
    Katwoman

Hi Kat,

LOL keep em coming hun, soon you'll be the one telling folks how to fix stuff here ..

Ok those are fake files, dumped on us by the one and only RIAA.  Although we have the fuction to be able to block them from accessing your connection to upload these fake lists to the network, until all primary users are protecting the network with peerguardian or our dll then we will still see them in our results.

Here is the trick to getting around it tho.

If you do your searches like this with the -user your not only eleminating the fake results but also helping to protect the primaries your connected to.  You can get more info if your interested from here:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/filtering_fakes.html

Its my hobby to know everything I can about them and we work hard to get all hosts file users (Pie Patch users) to do something to help get rid of them perminatly.

Now you have a wonderful day  :D
And Happy downloading

Wow, You're Fast :)
« Reply #12 on: November 26, 2005, 12:36:15 am »
My My, U are so fast. I went back to WinMX and was still looking and up popped my email and it was already from U. U must have been sitting on my PC waiting to answer me...LOL!! I just read the link that U posted for me, and I found it to be very interesting. I am so glad I asked U that question, so now I can do my part to stop the flooding. And guess what...I just got the song I have been trying to get for 2 days now, all thanks to U!! I am a happy camper right now. :)
Now I have another question...just when U thought it was save to come out of the water with me...HEHE. Since until last week, I have always had nothing but dial-up and a very old PC that barely worked most of the time. So whever I tried to share my files, my old PC and dial-up won't even let me do anything on the PC plus the time for anyone to load from me was like 5 hours and I am not kidding. So now, I would love to share my files with all that have shared with me so many times. Where should I store my files safely to enable sharing them? Is there any other settings that I need to change to insure the safety of my new PC and also share all my music. And do I need to change any setting in WinMX to do this. I really can't wait to help others that have given me so much plearsure with my music.  Wow, I am long-winded, so I will huh now. Will check back later to see if U are still sitting on my PC...LOL!!

   Thanks Again, U're Great,
   Katwoman

Yes.. I am still sitting on your PC.. giggles.

The Instructions for sharing are here for WinMX version 3.54:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/sharing_on_354.html

Its important that your files are not labeled with your computer user name, many folks set up more then one account on their pc's and use there real name.  The full path can then be seen on older versions of WinMX and so for this reason I alway use one folder on my main Drive to share files from.

Better explanation can be found here:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/name_change.html

Other then that your settings should still be fine the way they are.  If you do have any ?s about sharing files or file types just come on back here.. I plan on sitting on your comp for a few more minutes.. lol

LOL...sorry I missed this last night. But I thought I felt something sitting on the PC when I went to close it up last night, it was much harder than usual.
I just bookmarked the links U gave me, thank U. I will read them and fix my files as U say and then get this thing going. :)
Thanks as always for all your help and advice.

Have A Great Night,
Katwoman
