Help - im stuck :o(
« on: September 29, 2005, 01:00:49 pm »
Gawd, i must be really thick - cos i havent got a clue what im doing!! (I'll rephrase that - I AM THICK!)
Ive got Windows ME, and it says that the file i download from this site, is to go into C:windows/hosts.
Well i cant flaming find it lol, ive looked and its not there! (The file called hosts - does it exsist lol) or do i just save the downloaded file into C:windows? Cos ive tried that and it dont work either.
I think im a lost cause - think i'll pack up and sod off lol!

Anyone kind enuff to help me out ?

best thing to do is forget the hosts patch and install the already patched version of winmx, you can find it on this site
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/winmx_fix.html
its called install 1.9 exe fix for winmx then install that in the normal way and run it, it will auto install over any existing winmx

If for some reason, you're one of those rare cases where that doesn't work & you need the hosts patch the reason is probably simply that your hosts file is hidden..

In windows explorer you need to go to tools > folder options & set it to show all files.. been a long time since I poked round on ME, & I'd correct it using a DOS prompt & the attrib command, but I'd rather not be EXPLANING that method lol

HOSTS is there though, it simply doesn't show, pasting the new file in would almost certainly get the job done after a message "Do you wish to replace the hidden/system/ (possibly read only)...." file, but as good practice you should be renaming it to preserve as a backup in case things go wrong, to say hosts.old
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.
