Can't browse OpenNap users
« on: October 10, 2005, 07:28:48 am »
For some reason I can't browse some users on Open Nap servers. Whois shows them to have files, but a browse comes up empty. Refresh doesn't help at all.

Anyone?

Anyone?

Bueller?

I think it has to do with some opennap servers "not liking" the way WinMX browses, being somehow "expensive" on the bandwidth. So they disable the browse function for anyone using WinMX.

It`s a pain in the ass I know, especially if you can`t find the user through another opennap server...

Well then, can anyone reccomend a non-POS open nap program that might run okay along side WinMX? These users are uploading some interesting files, and it's very frustrating not seeing what they have to offer.

Have you tried adjusting the client type you connect as in the open nap window ?

Right click on the server in the list and select edit  and select a non winmx client, that might help you in this case, not had this problem myself but havent haunted the naps for a few months  :)

Not very good advice. Slavanap (which is the software that most of the opennap servers are hosted with)
has a special page in settings devoted soley to regulate, limit and/or totally block the winmx client.
the one setting I'd like to tell you about is one that detects and automatically disconnects and can also BAN users that change their client information.
A much better solution would be to use Utatane, Lopster or perhaps XNap.
As far as blocking browses from winmx users, this is impossible. If browsing is disabled, it is disabled for ALL users regardless of client. (there are no settings to block browses from specific clients)
I for one feel that browsing is a helpful sharing tool and think that it should be enabled. (at least on the smaller networks)However, each server Op can modify the server settings to his/her own preferance.
Browsing DOES create a heavy load on the server ops connection and cpu and can cause alot of lag on the network. I totally understand why browsing has been disabled on the larger networks. Just my 2 cents

lopster http://winlop.sourceforge.net/
it supports 'direct browse' (the other client must support direct browse as well however) ....

note: if you are using the 'winmxgroup' nap it still has problems with browse regardless of client....

client spoof (esp if its winmx) is the quickest way to get banned from a nap....

What both yourself and the other user posting above have forgotten Stripes is to take things posted in the context they where posted in, its clear to anyone reading that the person above had an issue and I gave advice to try to resolve the issue, knowing if winmx clients are blocked or not was a useful peice of information thus doing as I suggested would have aided an eventual resolution, I myself am fully aware of the slavanap settings and client detection routines thus its not suggested this is done as standard.

I wonder what will be edited out of this to make something else taken out of context  :/

i took nothing out of context.... you didnt mention anything about changing it back.... ....if it works spoofed all well and good till the admin finds out.... then you are back to square 0 since you wont be able to connect at all... (winmx 3.x is the worst nap client in exsistance.... noone on nap wants to wait in queue for two different networks.... ..... winmx not showing the motd of naps automatically is another issue.... might wanna read the rules/info of that nap...)

as for the winmxgroup nap ... like i said... it still has problems with browse regardless of client.... the OP didnt specify what nap(s) they were connected to...

Stripes I don't know if you have thought about what your posting but of late I have been urging WinMX users to open their own Slavanap servers thus what some anti-winmx nap folks may demand really does not interest me as likely their private server networks and the temp WPN user operated ones will never meet, please place thinking cap on head before engaging rogue thought processes

Thankfully the other site users don't think as pedantically as you do otherwise when I have stated to disconnect from the WPN in one of my tutorials etc that most certainly does not mean forever.

...uh... i did say the OP didnt specify what nap servers they were connecting to.... ....they didnt specify that it was their own either....

not sure what track you are on with your train of thought considering that no specific nap server was mentioned ... they said 'cant browse some users on nap servers' ....

and i did say that the winmxgroup nap server is buggy/broken on browse ... that nap is run by tiny/deux/lagerlout specifically for winmx...

Take a look around, SlavaNap is the only one really in the game.

And I agree your many repeat postings regarding the WinMxGroup server have been noted many times by myself, its just a pity I seem to be the only one reading your messages  :nerd:

As does your sarcasm, however thats another topic for another thread.

If you want to not hear from myself then please dont take what I post out of the context its posted in to make it sound as though something different was said or implied, that sort of misleading folks is morally wrong and you used to know better.

Its really a shame winmx bashers have to come and derail all topics because they dont like the application and abuse the good will of those who do.

It is, unless its to help diagnose a problem, how can we ascertain whether the problem is local or remote if we dont undertake this important test ?

I did respond in the privious post and lowerd the results, i appreciate.your on dial up and im on dsl and because ofthis im unable to test if the numbers of results are too high. I made an amendment, i posted about doing so. And heard nothing back so thought all was ok?

Im happy to adjust it some more more though when i can finally find out why slavanap just vanishs sometimes. A problem that has just reard its head and is prob some update annoying it or something to do with my recent letter, but hay. We do it for the lullz.

true... however wouldnt it have been a good idea to ask which nap server they are connecting to first? i kept repeating the thing about winmxgroup because it has just that behavior.... ...if the user has too many files it looks as tho they have none due to the browse failing and the server disconnecting/reconnecting ....

second... spoofing the client useragent wouldnt do a blasted thing if the remote only allowed direct browse since winmx doesnt support that function... this would have been a good place to suggest doing a whois and checking what client the remote is using....

usually when a user has trouble a mirad of technical questions follows to get as much info about the situation as possible.... are you off your game a bit? (which all things considered is understandable  )....

so... lets start from the beginning here...

if you cant browse a user on a nap;
1. what server are you connected to?
2. do a whois on the user... what client does it report they are using?
3. open the messages window... does it say 'permission denied'? or have an error message?

get that info first.... then the last desperate move should be to spoof the client.... with mx users using nap as a lifeboat for the rms titanic wpn wouldnt it be a good idea not to shoot holes in them?

@lagerlout/tiny/deux (whats in a name? lol); i tried to browse you... interestingly enough.... on your own nap and it would get to between 600 and 700 results before failing (perhaps put a browse limit of 500 returned? ... not ideal but it beats disconnecting.... and would reduce the load on your own connect...)

The only server that takes special measures to block WinMX is SlavaNap, thus my comments where obviously enough based on this knowledge and the knowledge that its the most popular Open-Nap server out there.

Cutting a few corners in a diagnostic routine is not normally the cause of so may indignant posts, these are however strange times and thus I should expect such frippery.

knowledge enough to you perhaps but to others it was obviously not......

nice to know slavanap has these special measures tho ;)

when one 'expects' others to automatically know what they do and get grumpy when they dont.... it tends to....
