Hi, I"ve been a WinMX fan/user for several years. My trouble, like most, started when WinMX went down. I had a few scary weeks but thank goodness some wonderful people revived it.  :D

To get back up I installed Winfix 2.5 and MXPie Patch 2.8. Let me say here that I am not very computer literate.  :?  All the talk about ports, TCP and UDP confuse me. Still I managed to get the right ports set for file transfers: 6699 for TCP and 6257 for UDP.  :o

OS: XP Sp2
WinMX: 3.54
Cable Router: Netgear CG814WG (help files for routers didn't).
Peerguardian 2.0 beta 6b
Zone Alarm

My problem is uploads "time out" waiting for incoming connections. Also, downloads are few and far between. But they do occur. Even as I hunt and peck this post my one dl went from 4bs to 37bs, so I guess dl is ok. Can you help me repair my upload ability.

Thank you for being there.

Hi Dlc247,

Welcome to the site.  This sounds like a typical port problem but the question is always where is the troubles?  Because we dont always know right off, and makes it even more difficult is we cant see what you have set up, please forgive any advice that makes ya seem like you dont know what your doing or asks you to recheck things, its standard advice with this sort of problem.

That said lets dig in...

First thing we usually look at is the router, especially if your not familiar with setting up ports in it.  Just to make sure those are set correctly.  Two common problems with this are an incorrect Internal IP or ports being set to incorrect Protocols.  Be sure you find your machines Internal IP address like this:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command/MSDos prompt, in the box type in 'ipconfig' for getting the ip of one machine.  It will be labeled Default IP Address or IP Address.  (Note: NOT Gateway Address)

Now to make sure the rules are entered correctly.
For the Netgear you will need to set your rules something like this:

WinMX 6699 to 6699 TCP 192.168.0. <Insert correct Internal IP here>.. now click 'Add'
Next set the UDP the same
WinMX 6257 to 6257 UDP 192.168.0.x

Once your sure those are set correctly its time to check that your XP Firewall is either disabled (Since you have Zone Alarm) or has also been forwarded correctly.  Instruction are here for that:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/firewalls-xp-sp2.html

Now on to that Zone Alarm.. well honestly most folks that use Zone Alarm have no problems at all, however lately I have known about 5 users that have had to completely uninstall Zone Alarm, and the uploads began working fine.  I dont understand why, but its something to think about. Of course we dont recommend this until you either have a replacement firewall installed like Sygate  or set up your XP one.
Here is a site that has great instructions on allowing WinMX as a trusted Zone in your Firewall.

http://firewalling.com/personalfirewalls/ZoneAlarmPro.htm

A few other things to consider here are these;
Norton 2005 has a worm protection that needs set up also, if you have Norton Antivirus 2005 have a look here:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/norton_2005.html

Also some cable companies are filtering your p2p usage, so if these things above dont work for you there is one last procedure you may wish to try.

Go back into your WinMX settings and find the Incoming TCP.. set this to 'Unable'.. now do the same for your IN/OUT UDP.. and restart WinMX as a secondary.  This should work if your ISP is not to blame.

I know this is alot of info, so just make the adjustments and checks ya need to and when you can get back to me with how your doing.

Me Here,

Thanks for the welcome. I am still getting over knowing this site exists.

Yeah, I know its a lot of info but I got time and I will get to learn something, too.

I will approach the issue as you suggest, step by step and come back with my results.

It may not be important now but I forgot to mention that I get no chat rooms, either.

Hi, Me Here,

I think I responded too quickly. I realized I don't know where to go to do this:

WinMX 6699 to 6699 TCP 192.168.0. <Insert correct Internal IP here>.. now click 'Add'
Next set the UDP the same
WinMX 6257 to 6257 UDP 192.168.0.x

The settings window does provide for it and I haven't a clue where to look.

Also, I'm not clear on the UDP instruction.

Okay Dlc247,
That may be our problem then

If you have a router you have to allow those ports in it, in your first post it sounded like you had already discovered and set them.  Those settings are in the router..

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/DG824M/default.htm

Have a look there and follow the instructions step by step.

You can skip the Static IP set up!
Now when you get to the area to actually enter your information you will need to have the ports that WinMX is set to use the 6699, 6257 .
In the IP area you will enter the IP address your router has given to the machine you want to use WInMX on. That means finding that Internal IP from the instructions above.

Once this is done you may have to reboot, but not usually.  Just restart your WinMX and let me know..

Well,well. Where do I start?

I began following instructions and immediately ran into a snag trying to access my router. Nothing worked. I kept getting a "page can not be displayed", message. Obviously I was typing in wrong numbers. Then it dawned on me; call the ISP   I did so and they helped me get in. From there on out it was a piece of cake.

Now, as an old saying goes, everything is everything.

I'm back online, users are queued up like mad, and getting files. And I am able to download.

Thank goodness. But mostly, thank Santa's good little WinMXElf.
