Troels Oerting, head of Europol's cybercrime centre, told BBC Click that growing number of attacks are being carried out via public Wi-Fi and that people should send personal data only across trusted networks. "We have seen an increase in the misuse of Wi-Fi, in order to steal information, identity or passwords and money from the users who use public or insecure Wi-Fi connections," he said.
The issues posed by using insecure Wi-Fi have been known about for years, and underline the need to use a VPN connection when accessing the internet from insecure locales such as cafes, transport hubs and conference venues. But consumers often ignore these best practices, putting them at increased risk of getting hacked as a result.
I personally think doing things like banking on-line is like asking to be robbed and as for using email that's like asking to be spied on, an old fashioned letter is way more secure in this so called "modern age" and thus the preferred way of communicating to others remotely, what cynics we have become since our governments are "looking out for us".
