can I check my understanding?

recently had a heated debate with a browser in my usual chat room about primary vs secondary.
The gist of his argument was that everyone should switch to primary connections then everything would be much faster. He said that all secondaries were just a drain on the network.
I took issue with this as I choose to contribute to the network by allocating all my bandwidth to uploads rather than a primary connection. Also my connection gets slowed once i exceed my data limit which would then render the primary connection useless.
Anyway my understanding is that people with primary connections effectively host searches across the network, thats what is using up the extra bandwidth. Once you are downloading or uploading a file, there is a direct connection (or at least one that does not go through a primary) between the two computers.
Is this effectively a correct view or am I way off base and owe smoeone an appology?

the best thing for the network is for the correct ammount of primaries, too many or too few both cause serious problems for the network - although it can tollorate too many a bit better than it can handle too few

too few primaries and secondary users have a problem connecting because the primaries are all full

too many primaries and the network becomes really spread out, searches will only spread a certain distance across the network so if the users are too spread out then searches will reach many fewer users, causing obvious performance problems... as well as the other fact that there are many people wasting bandwidth with primary connections that would be more useful is used to share files

the natural balance of the number of users who want to run primary for various reasons and those that want to run secondary for various reasons seems to be about right, as the average primary is getting reasonably full of secondaries (meaning there aren't too many primaries) but at the same time secondary users aren't having many problems connecting (so there aren't too few primaries) - of course those primaries using hosts files to connect and not blocking flooders don't handle any secondary users so don't help anyone, but it's best to avoid that subject because vladd and co don't like it when people mention how much they are harming the network... lol

hmm... i'd say it's a bit late KM...

those using hosts files to connect, need to also be using either peerguardian2 or sherwood to block the RIAA from connecting to you, and flooding the network..

im sure you can find a tutorial for sherwood on this site somewhere..im not familiar myself..or i'd post it too..

the choice is yours as the user to make...either pg2 or sherwood..but all primaries should be blocking the RIAA...so plz do so
