What makes copyright law untenable is the gross unfairness of it, the deal is simple as proposed originally: protection is given on a work for a specific time period , unfortunately corrupt politicians globally have allowed a few vested interest groups to move the goal posts so far in favour of the "rights holders" (aka fat cat investors monopolising artistic talent of any description), that theres no way anyone can in their lifetime enjoy some of the protected works for free as the law was supposed to foster.
With such a situation in place there can never be a deal with the public as our lifetimes are of limited span and the protection time in most countries seems to be more than an average figure, a simple claim of protecting the work so the artist can create more for the public consumption falls at the first hurdle when its clear that under their own "rules" we cant actually sample/view/hear the artistic output in the first place let alone when we have expired, a bad contract with the public is one the public take no notice of, greed begets greed it seems.
