Sygate Aquired And Smashed

Big business takes another step towards a total monopoly of the market, at the expense of us all.  :o

http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2005/11/symantec_to_dit.html

Quote
Symantec Corp. has announced rather abruptly that as of next week it will no longer support or offer its Sygate line of firewall products.
The move comes little more than three months after Symantec bought Sygate Technologies along with its Sygate Pro and Sygate Free personal firewall products.

I am sure as most of you know your existing sygate firewall will work just fine without support  as most users have found over the last couple of years
I will myself continue using it till it is declared compromised in some way and as its a quality product I dont see that happening just yet  :D

Of all the companies that "could" have bought Sygate, why did it have to be that one?

Damn i hate Norton with a Passion, when i heard about Symantecs purchase i feared the worst, still on the brightside as Ghost points out users can continue to use Sygate, i will. The only good thing about Symantec is their website, plently useful.

THere's a very sinister side to this that a lot of peopel are overlooking.
Norton buys out Sigate, and then discontinues it.

So basically, what they did was pay Sigate off to remove them from the firewall market.

The interesting thing about that is that Simantec is only any good (arguably) because of their *anti-virus* products.

In this case it's a shame they didn't re-label the product as they have with such things as go-back & partition magic.. with it being so much superior to their own offering.
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

Yes, exactly. That's what I mean. Usually in this kind of case they buy the product and then re-brand it as something else, often making it a much worse product in the process (because whenever Norton changes something, they make it worse; that's just how these things go) and making it worthless to purchase, but keep it still available so that stupid users (aka sheep who read their newsletter) buy it anyway and predictably waste money on it. in this case Simantec actually, in a very litteral sense, paid Sigate to get out of their market. It disturbs me that they'd be this cutthroat over a firewall product whenn Norton's big thing has historically been its anti-virus. I mean, it's not any better than its firewall products (which are, indeed, terrible) but they're more well known, at least.
