Question about files
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:50:06 am »
Hi

Is it possible that files can change name? For example if I were to do a search for something and download it, could it show up as something else in my files if someone were to browse me?

The reason I ask this is that I am an admin in a room and we have a no porn policy and all ppl are browsed on entry. A reg was in the room and I browsed her files and saw a gay kiddie porn .mpg which was being downloaded. I refreshed the browse a few times to make sure and it kept showing up. I browsed her both from winmx and from metis with the same results.

To give her the benefit of the doubt I just want to make sure that there isn't maybe an explanation as to why it could have been there, besides her downloading it, as I would hate to ban an innocent person from the room.

Thanks

Yes more then likely its a 'Ghost File'.. the way to know the difference is to do a browse.
Click the 'Show Full Path' button..

Now check the path of the files in question, they usually dont match the normal files.  see example below
You'll notice on the example below there are many Drive Letters showing, this user actually only had one drive and it was C drive.
None of the files showing below where actually on this users machine at all, refreshing the connection removed them all.

The way to get rid of the files showing is to have the person your browsing to refresh thier connection, they are usually users that are on secondary and finding a new primary usually makes them disappear.
