So... I had a new broadband connection installed, got my wireless network set up, and mapped the ports to the router so WinMX would work properly. So far so good. Being generally a nice guy, I connected via a primary connection. This resulted in a total download speed of approximately 25K. Just for the heck of it, I connected as a secondary connection and watched my download speed increase by approximately 60%! So this is the question.

If I go online with a primary connection, and notice that there are 12 other primary connections and only one secondary connection, can I switch to a secondary connection, and up my download and upload speeds by 60%, and not make the network more difficult to use for other uses?

Well, you see, when use go on a primary connection, winmx takes up some bandwidth so that it can maintain the primary connection. That is why You happen to have less speed for downloads. I think that you may have set the upload/download speed n
Winmx>settings>Winmx peer network
Look at the tab for allocated bandwidth. I think you may have set it a bit too high, try setting it to lower values so that you can get good download speeds. Default is 7k out, 10k in
This is not a throttle for you upload and download speed, This controls the amount of bandwidth winmx can use for maintaining the primary connection

Makes sense. Should have thought of that. Had it set at maxium, just as you suspected. How about 9k out and 13K in?

The lower you set up your allocated bandwidth, the lesser is the maximum number of secondary connections that you allow to be connected to you, Setting lower bandwidth's will help downloads better.
Nothing is 'good' or 'bad' It's totally up to you. I generally connect only as secondary due to download limits. Adjust to something that you are comfortable with, after all, it's you who are enjoying winmx in your computer, not me... lol

Low secondary count on primary using the 3.0 patch is not a concern in fact going for hours with S=0 isn't uncommon, & is ok as long as everything else works.

As to choice of connection type, some time ago I made a post here which you may wish to have a look through to give you a little more information.
