Limewire have started implementing their much feared content filtering operatiion, a sign perhaps of its future demise ?

LimeWire is experimenting with a new filter system that allows copyright owners to register which files might infringe copyright on gnutella.
"So far the implementation in the Beta version (LW 4.11.0) respects user choice," says a p2pnet reader. "We can use the filter if we want and it's off by default, which is good."

Lime Wire is launching an experimental Beta Filtering System. Filtering enhances our network as a safe place to share content and information while respecting the concerns of copyright owners. Based on filtering requests from artists and copyright owners, the Filtering System prevents users from downloading, uploading and querying selected files on LimeWire.

How It Works
In the Filtering System, copyright owners identify files that they don't want shared and submit them for inclusion in a public list. LimeWire then consults this list and stops users from downloading the identified files "filtering" them from the sharing process.

About the Beta
Lime Wire's Filtering System is in experimental mode. We kindly ask for your patience as we continue to improve our filtering infrastructure. In light of logistical restrictions, Lime Wire cannot guarantee the outcome of a filtering request, but we pledge to make a best effort attempt to meet copyright owner filtering requests. We are working to make the Filtering System as effective and error-proof as possible.

I think we are going to see a few new users to winmx soon, decentralised operation is the preffered model of the tech savvy user.

This is excellent news for us as Winmx users, not so good as general supporters of p2p,but perhaps we should be thinking how best to aid Limewire users in their transition to Winmx?

Indeed Nobby, as you say its a bad day for there network but I,m sure many will find winmx a natural replacement for Limewire, it does after all feature many advanced features under the hood that other networks are only just bring into operation.

I think the aim here is to move as fast as we can in gathering and welcoming new users, folks its time to set to work in the sphere of advertising, posting positive but subtle information regarding winmx where it may be helpful, and generally using the tech knowledge most of you have to help the new users to our network as they arrive, and they will.

Who cares what's "better for winmx"? If it's bad for P2p it's bad, period. File sharing aps aren't like religeons, you can double dip all you want.

We are not the ones forcing Limewire to tow the RIAA line and we know its users would enjoy our network and what it offers in terms of technical features and tech savvy users. I have no qualms in asking folks to come to winmx because its a good network, and it is the only network I use after testing most of the others.
The technical features are defending freedom of speech and non monopolised content, I for one am not ashamed to urge them to switch.
