Download Speeds
« on: April 25, 2006, 05:03:21 pm »
Hi all,

If this has been addressed before, I apologize, but I couldn't find it.

I was just wondering what the average speeds are, to get an idea of how my speeds rate in the grand scheme of things.  I realize that speeds depend on the number of uploads/downloads running simultaneously, but for the purposes of this poll, please select the speed you get with only 1 download and 1 upload running at any given time.

* Bearded Blunder doesn't vote as my throttles are set low, to prevent chatroom lag & would tend to skew results

that said, they'll vary wildly between different connection types & different providers anyhow...

can't see the results being very useful to anyone.

You're right, Blunder...  I should have specified that I was asking about high speed or cable connections only.  Stamp me stupid!!!

As for whether or not it would be useful to anyone... I was just trying to get a general idea of how my speeds were compared to others, and whether or not I should seek more help with settings, tweaking, etc...   but MY BAD!!  Sorry I asked.

My download speed depends a lot on what I download. Music files often have many results, so it boosts up to 360k/s until it's finished, but if I'm downloading things such as programs or small games, I only get like 20-30k/s
You should just make sure WinMX is able to download at your connection's max speed with your settings, so you know your settings aren't slowing down your downloads.
There is a connection speed test available at https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/ which will test your connection's upload speed, and give you a recommended bandwidth throttle setting based on this. It should give you a good estimation of the best setting, but you should adjust it a bit up/down and try to push your connection to the max  :)

Thanks, Neutron!  I'll try the suggested settings, and see how I make out.  I'm certainly not getting speeds as good as those that have responded so far, so I definitely need to make some changes.

You may have to play with port settings, or even resort to changing ISP, charter are known to interfere with winmx traffic, i can't say for sure if they use traffic shaping or simply block the default ports, but i suspect your issue is one of ISP interferance, rather than simple settings issue.

Hi Blunder,

I knew about Charter, so I'm not using the default ports.  I wish there was another option for high speed.   :(
