Upload Problems

Hi,

Finally got round to installing the WinMX patch and getting up and running again.  I can download no problem but no one seems to be able to connect to me, each attempt times out.  I'm using a cable modem, XP Professional and Norton Internet Security 2004. 

Can anyone help?

Hi Hillbilly,

Sounds like you have either not got ports set in WinMx Settings or you have a router or firewall blocking them possibly.

What firewall do you use?
Do you have a router or just the cable modem only?

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2004 and I have a linksys router. It all worked ok before.

Check in the norton firewall that WinMX is actually allowed, the patch may have changed the version number & the firewall may be blocking it because of the program changing (it should have asked, but if you wern't alert, it will have suggested block),
Also recheck that your ports are correctly forwarded from your router, instructions can almost certainly be found at www.portforward.com for your specific router, if it suggests setting a fixed IP please don't skip that step, doing so is the commonest cause of the exact problem you have suddenly appearing, for some reason the router assigns your computer a new ip, but continues forwarding WinMX traffic to the old one....

Jon, could you please specify what exactly sorted out your problem? I have the same trouble: Peer Network plus some 20 OpenNap networks connected, no problems with downloads, but since a few days all upload attempts fail ("Timed out"). McAfee Firewall was never a problem before, reports "full access" by WinMX, and when I turn it off the problem remains. What settings did you need to change? I understand very little about ports and TCP's.

Birdfeeder, it sounds to me, like you had your port forwarding set, but neglected to set a fixed permanent local IP, for some reason your local IP has changed (could be as simple as a reboot), please recheck your port forwarding settings (look your modem/router up at www.portforward.com ) & I stress again if it says you need to set a fixed IP address, please don't skip that step, if you do, things work fine for a while, then you end up here asking why it's broken, & going through the whole port forwarding proceedure again..

Thanks for the hint, Blunder. I followed both procedures of PortForward (which I find is an excellent support tool!)

We have a Thomson SpeedTouch 510 router with 3 PC's attached. This is the only one using WinMX.

Procedure1  'How to set up a static IP...':
I went to DOS for asking IP address etc. (I noticed that Default Gateway and Name Servers had the same code. Is that OK?). Then I looked into my LAN status (Internet protocoll, Properties), and found that the static IP was already there. So I only needed to confirm things. (Alternative DNS was and still is empty).

Procedure 2 'Port forwarding...'
I went to the Thomson site using the IP of our router. I found that the user names of both other computers were there, but mine was missing. So I added a new entry, and filled in under both TCP and UDP the fields for static IP, as well as the inside and outside ports as defined in my WinMX. I clicked on 'Apply' and 'Save All' and got a confirmation. When I visit the site again, the router (without address) and all 3 computers (with IP addresses) are now listed.

Well, I believe I learned a lot of things this afternoon, but I did not solve my problem.  I still have dozens of upload attempts, but not one established a connection. My 'regulars' get pretty upset of course, because they believe I am blocking them. WHAT DO I OVERLOOK??? Everything was allright until some weeks ago.

Maybe I found a clue.

When I am on the Thomson site and choose
Advanced
Diagnostics
Lan
Ethernet
there are 4 Physical Interfaces listed.
Three are on OK, the 4th one is not.
Could it mean that my router and the 2 other PC's are connected while mine is not?
And if so, how should I proceed?
