Transfers drop off after 30 odd seconds
« on: May 31, 2006, 08:53:58 pm »
Hi there, hope someone can help me out here.
I've been using Winmx for a couple of years now as a primary user & have recently started having issues with my transfers, both in & out. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on a 1MB ISP (Homecall , or now Pipex) and am now using WinMX v 3.54 with the MXPie patch v 2.9. I've tried changing ports to no effect, the same thing happens, my transfers either don't start at all, or start & seem to fade away. I don't use a router, just a McAfee firewall & have Winmx as a application that has full net access.
I've tried removing & reinstalling WinMX, still the same things happen.
From memory, the line at the top of WinMX which I think relates to the Primary / Secondary connections used to be have a total figure of around 25,000 - 30,000, it currently reads " Online P=4 S=10 spm = 4626", if that final number increases I seem to have better results but I haven't the foggiest how to increase the number.
Any ideas???
Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Stellafella , lets do the small refresher course bit first  :)

The P = Primaries and the S = secondaries connected to you.
SPM  - Shows the Searches Per Minute that are passing through your connection.

ok what is often the case of lost connections and other annoyances is network flooding, can you confirm that you have Peer Guardian installed on your machine with the block list as shown here. ?

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/block_the_riaa.html

if you do not then may I suggest installing it.
One other cause of this type of problem is that sometimes the XP firewall reengages itself and blocks programs from operating correctly, (I,m assuming you have a seperate firewall here), make sure that it is disabled.

Give those two things a look over and let me know how things go as there are many other reasons but those are very common ones for this problem.

PS: a quick way to increase primary connections is is to cycle the chat room listing, believe it or not

are you running PG2? with blocklists added as outlined here? https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/block_the_riaa.html not doing so if running Pie will cause issues running primary, alternatively, try changing to the superior patch from www.winmxgroup.com either should help, but bear in mind pg2 doesn't update the list frequently enough to be totally effective, if you choose to remain using pie patch, low values for SPM can also be caused by heavy cpu usage, for example using other programs

Hi Ghost Ship & Bearded Blunder, thanks for the advice. I can confirm that I'm running PG2 & update daily, but I didn't set up the additional block list from  https://www.winmxworld.com/files/block_list.txt. So I've done that now. I'm happy to use whichever patch works best with WinMx 3.54, so I'll just installed that patch from winmxgroup.com. I'll reboot it all now & then report back tomorrow to see how things look. As yet I haven't disabled my Windows Firewall, WinMx is in there as an exception so should this mean it gets through Windows Firewall?
Thanks again for your help, I'll check back tomorrow for more advice.

Hi again,
I've installed the revised block lists on PG2 & updated them today ( no update available). I've also now installed the Winmxgroup patch - this seems to place a "patch operational" messgae at the top of my winmx application.
However, the same things are still happening - downloads commence & then just tail off and after 30 odd seconds, the transfer stops completely. Any ideas?
I currently still have windows firewall running - Winmx is a trusted application in there, so I suspect I'd get no benefit from turning it off. Also is there was an issue with the firewall, I wouldn't be able to connect at all - wouldn't I ?? !
Thanks again for your help

Still why don't you try winmx after competely turning off the firewall.
Mabye your ISP is blocking the ports and winmx.
Perhaos that may be a fake file you doiwnloaded, but in hat case, it won't start at all. Does this happen to all downloads or a select few?
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

I've just turned off my Windows Firewall & attempted to d/l a track - the same thing happens unfortunatley. I also have Limewire & I can up / down load from there so if my ISP is blocking WinMX isn't it likely they'd be doing Limewire as well.
One solution would be to just use Limewire, but I much prefer Winmx.
Any ideas what I should do next ?
Cheers

Do you keep trying the same files or try new ones? One a fake is downloaded, it remains a fake. Try using -user in your search results. put it in the lower bar, (you put the song name in the upper one).
Try downloading other files of the same name.

It's worh a look here https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/filtering_fakes.html
also i'd suggest perhaps visiting a chatroom & trying with someone there, as that way you can be sure the file is genuine
WinMxWorld.com_E3D7EFD50D3D would be a good onee to pick, there's usually someone there that would be willing to test your transfers
