Multiple oledlg.dll files
« on: June 18, 2006, 06:18:09 am »
My system has multiple copies of oledlg.dll. One in Winmx folder, size 61440 bytes, dated 7th June 2006, and a version in winnt\system32 and winnt\system32\dllcache, size 118032 bytes dates 7th December 1999.

System is win2k sp4.

Could this be a reason why i don't get the patch operational message, and how do i fix it?

Thanks

Your system should have multiple copies in this way, the ones in system32 & system32\dllcache are part of windows & required for your computer to work properly, the one in the winmx folder is specially written so that winmx uses it INSTEAD of the windows one.

The patch operational message is a web page loaded from outside & winmx (actually internet explorer, the bar is a tiny IE window) is directed to find it from a hosts fiile entry, there are a few reasons why it might not load, but it makes no difference to winmx if it loads or not, the program is perfectly happy without it.

you could check if your hosts file has this entry in it :
212.227.104.169     www.winmx.com

Thanks for the info.

My hosts file had no entries in it - was locked by Spybot, so what should be in there?

Have put the entry you suggest in it.

this is what it should look like
Code: [Select]
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host
127.0.0.1       localhost
#
212.227.104.169     www.winmx.com
in order for the update bar to work you'll have to configure spybot to allow the change or ignore it.. install with it disabled for example, if you need to you can copy & paste the green text to your hosts file to create what it should be.

the update bar is a minor thing, as long as the patch is working you don't need to worry about it :-)
