WinMX - Anti-Leech Settings
« on: June 07, 2006, 01:42:43 pm »
  Firstly: I just downloaded and installed the latest 'WinMX 3.54b4 + Patch' via 'Various WinMX Versions + Patch' from WinMX Group (https://www.winmxgroup.com/downloads.html), and the reason why I did it the 'via' way was because 'WinMx 3.54b4 + Patch' @ https://www.winmxgroup.com/downloads.html is corrupted!!!

  But, more importantly, I find that installing my 'WinMX - Anti-Leech Settings' (.zip file included here) into the new WinMX has no effect in setting my 'Max total uploads' preset to '0'.  Is there a new version of this worthwhile, highly effective, & much easier than MxM application around to match the new WinMx???  OR, is there a way to make it work somehow???

LeechHammer is pretty easy & effective, i really don't personally like the zero slots hack myself, so much so in fact that anyone using it gets ignored from my queue
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.

I have just checked and the 3.54 installer isn't corrupted (wouldn't have thought so either with the thousands of downloads so far) your download probably just cut off before it was finished :-)

and i am glad to hear that the leech settings don't work on it - i hope you will decide to continue using 3.54 and will start to actually share rather than blocking anyone from getting files from you (or "becoming a leech" as it is also known)

The 0-slot hack you are promoting is preferred and used by leechers, not sharers.  It is a leechers tool with an Orwellian name.  Since you prefer not to share and make slots for sharing readily available, why be on a p2p network which is premised on open sharing?  Just do the community a service and delete winmx.

:? Goodness ... what a reaction of Orwellian 'Thought Control' proportions! What happened to freedom of choice and self determination?

I enlisted and used the 'Zero' Max Uploads hack for good reason - to prevent the extensive Leeching I was experiencing of my ISP limited monthly upload-download gigabytes.  I don't know what happens outside Australia but we are limited to 10 gigs per month by Telstra's monopoly, after that you pay through the nose!

I looked at 'Leech Hammer' and it seems too severe, akin to the undeserved and judgemental criticism I got in creating this post.

'MxM' I find inadequate to my particular needs as well.  Besides, I like interacting with people, especially the no-judgemental variety.

In any case I'm now happily using the WinMX Group updated WinMX 3.54b4 + '3.0' Patch.  My compliments to the 'Developers' who fixed it up. Oh, and I do have a slot permanently available for the leechers these days.

Cheers.

the reason it gets such a bad reaction is because it blocks uploads - if you don't wish to upload then at least unshare, think of the users who are sitting in your queue waiting for a file they will never get, instead of spending that time queueing for a file they can get...

of course sharing is always best, some users with monthly limits chose to share but throttle low (1 slot at 2k/s for example), there is the argument similar to the above about a user getting it at 2k/s instead of trying a different file that they could get faster, but then the other argument is you're still giving something, better than nothing...
