Help Needed With Linux WCS
« on: August 12, 2006, 09:52:17 pm »
I know this topic will be stated as best being placed on a Linux site but i thought i would try here first. I use Ubuntu Linux, i have downloaded the Linux version of WCS from Kingmacro.net.

I would like to know how to use the .Gz file as i am new to Linux.

extract it with the command "gzip -d wcs-1.8b6-linux.gz" (assumes you have gzip installed) then run it with ./wcs-1.8b6-linux or ./wcs-linux depending what it named the file (some gzip versions will restore the original filename, some will not)

of coruse you may also need to make it executable after extracting before you can run it (depending on system config) so chmod +x wcs*

apart from the lack of a GUI (it's a console application for easier use as a background process)

that's what wine is for...

winmxgroup installer will give you a working winmx setup under wine with no config required :-)

PLease be aware that the latest wine versions don't work anymore because they stopped using the mozilla activex pluging and made their own gecko version which doesn't seem to work with winmx.
Any version up to 0.9.16 is fine, versions 17,18,and 0.9.19 don't work - at least not for me.
That error shouldn't be critical though, as it only affects the update bar (I think), so maybe someone can look at it and figure out how to get it to work anyway....

the update bar never worked properly with the patch and wine anyway - not critical though ;-)

Yes - but WinMx only gets as far as the splash screen and then shuts down and I haven't figured out how to get it to start anyway yet...

Minor or not - winmx won't start so it's no use, lol

Just thought people needed to be aware in case they recently installed it and are wondering why it's not working
