MS Strike At Fake XP Users
« on: May 04, 2006, 12:06:46 pm »
I just noticed this story, its a little old but as I have been offline its the first I have heard of it  :o

http://www.aviransplace.com/index.php/archives/2006/04/22/microsoft-is-taking-wga-to-the-next-level/

Quote
Microsoft will make WGA more intrusive and will use scare tactics to make users validate and purchase a legal copy. On 4/25/06 Microsoft will start WGA Notification in the US, UK, Australia, NZ and Malaysia. The WGA notification has been running as a pilot in several countries such as Norway, Taiwan, Sweden, Israel, Denmark, Poland and other countries.
When a user goes to WGA to validate and/or download things like IE 7.0 or Media player they may receive the notification if their copy is not genuine.
Up until now if you didn’t validate your copy of Windows nothing happened, but now with the WGA Notification, every time you reboot your computer, log-in and periodically (every hour or so) Windows will display a nag screen “reminding” you to validate your copy.

Log-in Nag Screen

From the first time users get the request to validate they have 14 days to comply. After 14 days they will not be able to download security upgrades such as IE7 and Windows Defender. Critical security updates will still be available like it is now.

So that looks like the problem, here is a solution for legitimate users who fall foul of this dubious update.

http://home.tiscali.nl/rogier666/windows/wintricks.htm

Quote
Remove Windows Genuine Advantage tool and nag screen (M$ update KB905474)
If you install Windows Update 905474 it phones home to "validate" your copy of XP. If you fail the validation test, XP keeps reminding you with annoying logon messages, desktop warnings, and system tray balloons. According to M$ KB905474 you can only temporarily disable the nag screens. Update 905474 does not come with an uninstaller.

To uninstall the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application:

1) Open x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data\Data.dat with notepad and delete all the contents.
2) Set the empty file as "read only."
3) boot into safe mode.
4) Delete wgalogon.dll, spmgs.dll, and wgatray.exe from your system32 folder.
5) Delete x:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6c4788c9549d437e76e1773a7639582a.
6) Reboot.
7) (Optional: search your registry for wgatray and wgalogon and delete those registry items.)

Or this method perhaps ?

Quote
Rename wgalogon.dll and wgatray.exe (C:\windows\system32\) and reboot

A bit spoiled for choice here it seems, this method is supposed to help out too

http://rapidshare.de/files/18645979/Windows.Genuine.Advantage.Validation.v1.5.526.0.CRACKED-ETH0.rar

It seems that as before people are more than happy to rid themselves of overbearing operation of legitimately paid for software

As usual I,ll add more as I find them, folks are so inventive  :D

It seems theres plenty more ways around this ..

http://www.p2plife.com/forums/Official_Mu%20Blinder_Page-t320.html

Quote
Description:
muBlinder ( Microsoft Update Blinder ) is a small 40kb application that bypasses Microsoft Update's Genuine Windows Validation and allows you to view, choose and install all available updates. It does not install any DLL's, does not make any changes to the registry nor any other part of your system. Unlike other solutions you see floating around that require you to delete DLLs and install fake ones, which in some cases causes system instability, or the need to wait and download new DLLs everytime MS updates their Genuine Windows Validation library, muBlinder works to directly manupilate the checking mechanism and blinds it in its own memory space.

In addition, muBlinder does not need to be installed and can be placed on a floppy disk or flash memory stick. Just unzip to a folder of your choice and run it. For removal, simply delete the muBlinder.exe file.

how useful huh ?  :)

Just for those who havent had the chance to test these:

Quote
Rename wgalogon.dll and wgatray.exe (C:\windows\system32\) and reboot

This method is dead easy and works perfectly, i have applied it twice to a friends pc and it works a treat, thanks Ghost.

As an update to this thread, the method i used originally on my friends PC (as above) is no longer effective, it seems, that MS have changed/adapted their methods, the Geniue advantage "tool" seems to be DLing and installing automatically without the users knowledge, i have now recieved 2 reports of this, although i cant personally confirm it as yet, anyone else aware of this??

This method seem to have had problems "THIS FILE IS FORBIDDEN TO BE SHARED! Complaints recieved"

Perhaps im just reading too much into this, but im begining to smell a rat.....i will try out some of the other methods on his pc....

The current method I am aware of MS using is to update the WGA very often to get around all the cracked versions that do not update, it seems most of the latest cracks are version specific, only cracks that either delude the checker or actively wait in memory to prevent it working properly are those working well.

This is of course all part of the long campaign of anti piracy that MS have been operating globally, with the roll out of vista we could see many more issues and a war of cracks and hacks to counter legitimate software checks, the battle rages on it seems.

nothing legitimate about microsoft disabling thousands of random users computers for no reason - according to microsoft an unacceptably high number of users who have paid for windows have found it doesn't work as it is meant to because of that WGA rubbish

It seems further action is in the wind too.

To date, with its Genuine Advantage anti-piracy programs, Microsoft has targeted consumers. Windows and Office users have been required to validate their products as "genuine" before being able to obtain many downloads and add-ons.

Come this fall, however, the Redmond, Wash., software maker is planning to turn up the Genuine Advantage heat in two ways: by baking more Genuine Advantage checks directly into Windows Vista, and by taking aim at PC makers, system builders, Internet cafes and other sources of potentially pirated software.

Microsoft Platforms and Services Co-President Kevin Johnson was more specific about Microsoft's plans, in his remarks to Wall Street analysts at Microsoft's Financial Analyst Meeting in late July.

"We built a set of features and a set of functionality that is only available to genuine Windows customers," Johnson said. "Windows Defender, for example, the anti-spyware for Windows XP and Windows Vista, is available to genuine Windows customers. Windows Media Player 11.0, Internet Explorer 7.0, will be available for download for Windows XP customers who are genuine, and of course those are built into Windows Vista. Future updates to Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player for Windows Vista will require them to be genuine. And certainly there's some premium features built into the Windows Vista operating system that will require genuine validation as well. So we're really trying to amplify the fact that being genuine enables the set of benefits and value to access these types of features and

A trojan in media player and explorer this sounds like to me, all bad news for customers who get told regularly that MS has deemed them "ungenuine", perhaps a few suits for loss of service would make MS think twice before trying to slip trojans into fully legal working machines.

I had a little play with ReactOS... seems OKish, although it is clear it's still early on it does show a lot of potential (and word seems to be getting out better recently which hopefully with help it develop faster)

Not a real alternative yet, but we can only hope it will be soon... I don't think wine etc will ever be able to replace windows, but an OS designed to be fully compatible could, the day large software developers start testing for ReactOS compatibility is the day it can be used on mainstream systems :-)

and now back to your regular microsoft hating...
