Hmmm... that bit about 'endless whois' queries sounds logical - maybe MXMoni related (running v1.28Eb)?  Although, exiting WinMX stops it, not stoping just Moni, once the GUI fails.  Trying out that 'disable visual themes' tip & will post again once I sees hows it goes.

Not to open a can o' worms, but I didn't have this issue running the pie-patch

Nothing's born out. GDI objects are 0 for both Mx and MxMoni; I've disabled visual themes; I've reinstalled my NVIDIA & Dell video/monitor drivers but still experience the GUI problem - windows/menus partially drawn, empty or un-navigable; like the user in https://forum.winmxworld.com/index.php?topic=1293.0.html I am using v3.54b4 with MxMoni 1.28Eb; I don't want to stop using MxMoni 'cause I don't wanna drown in leeches; this is seriously making me reconsider using the 3.0 patch

you could try leechammer, or possibly the beta patch (see news section) with mxm, it may also be worth setting up winmx in a new folder, not reusing your current setup, some odd reason doing so (or completely removing winmx before installing the 3.0 patch ie delete program folder) sometimes resolves odd issues
Blessed is he who expecteth nothing, for he shall not be disappointed.
