Uplaoding/downloading and manners
« on: August 06, 2005, 06:04:14 pm »
I'm relatively new to WinMX. When I'm able to get a song that has taken me a long time to find I try to thank the person.

But one thing about downloading a song really annoys me. I've a 56K modem so a download will take 8 -12 minutes depending on the length of the song. And when I'm downloading a song, and the person I'm downloading from suddenly disconnects with no warning I'm really annoyed.  Are there no rules regarding uploading/downloading ?

Another thing that really cheeses me off is that if a person can see I have a slow connection asking for one song is ok. But a few days ago a person asked for *13* songs. If I was stay online at the connection speed this person had (0.65K) I would had to had to stay online ***Three days***. What the hell happened to common sence ? This person ended up getting nothing from as a result of their stupidity.

Use a little common sence folks.

Welcome to the site Tom,
I totally agree with you, I have seen this also, and its very annoying to see someones greed take over like this.

I will just say one thing that might help you out on fighting off these types of users..

Upload Managers

Give those a look, with the MXMonitor you can set it up to ignore these greedy folks...

Hi Guest , I have seen many folks on the network who are rude and abusive and greedy to boot , but over 80% of the folks I have met over the years are good genuine people, so with that in mind I often take the time to PM a non sharing user to see if they need help, and many do  :)

Sorry to hear you encountered some bad folks Tom but rest assured most of the primary users will not bother taking your files as many of us started out on 56k and know the frustration of trying to get a track and some DSL joker wipes out all your bandwidth getting a track and queing for another 10 ,then without a thank you  disappears.

That said, after reading your post I need to make a few points clear for you, sometimes the connection your getting the file through may change and lose you the download, this is not a frequent occurance but does happen, the action to take is to search for more sources on the transfer panel as that can often find the file owner again via a different network connection and the other is there is no central server on winmx so there can be no rules, we all work together on keeping it healthy and with some sort of order.
While we all do our best, there are always a few rotten apples in the barrel, but thats the price of a decentralised system, dont let them get you annoyed,
the majority of users are good folks  :)

if i'm sharing a file thats in huge demand then i try to get it to people who are sharing first of all to help with the demand, but just for normal sharing i just share with everyone :-)

Thanks for the suggestions, and the comments about a few bad apples. I guess I have to get more comfortable with WinMX and grow a thicker skin.

I use MXMonitor to prevent leeches & people who are greedy. You might consider it. It's free and great if you're online all of the time (although it doesn't sound like you are).

About the 56k thing, if you're downloading from me, I'm online most of the time but there are times when I have to turn my computer off to reboot, take my computer with me, etc. If someone is in the middle of a UL, I try to stay on until it's complete but 56k is REALLY slow and if you're only halfway through, it's not fair for you to expect me to hold up my life because you have a slow connection. I know you probably think that sounds harsh but that's reality.

If DL is something you think you'll be doing with increased frequency, you really should look into DSL or Cable. When I started I had 56k and became so frustrated that I gave up until I had Cable installed. It is so much less frustrating -- especially if you're looking for hard to find files.

I have a comment on this: When I'm looking for files, sometimes I find them on a 56K'er's (or maybe even a fast conn's) list -- what I'll do is click on'em, load the zero-byte files into my Search window and then cancel the d/l's from that guy. The whole purpose is to get them into my machine so I can start looking for OTHER sources.

This means that you might see me queue up 30 files (if they're the ones I'm looking for) and then bug out. I know this may look like a rude act but I'm just trying to get the hash's into my system so I can look elsewhere (and not bug that one guy for'em all).
