I'm fairly new to WinMx and I was just wondering if everyone gets rude/vulgar messages.  I have files showing to be shared but no one downloads from me and I get messages calling me a leech and some rather nasty things. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I havent yet ever had any such message, so maybe you have something that is in demand, although sending rude messages is not the way to go about getting the file they require, as with all society Stitch there are a few idiots who do such things.
Most people who are on the network are here to share and those having sharing problems are easily helped in the chat rooms, but regardless of that I suggest putting this sort of user on ignore, we should all be treated with respect, as we are in non internetl life.

As far as I know no one has ever downloaded from me. While I've been logged on I've never seen anything in the upload portion of my screen.

I have a DSL connection but I'm not sure if I have a firewall or not.  To be honest I really don't know what a firewall is! :?

Thats ok Stitch,

We can help you figure all this out..

A firewall is a way to monitor and guard access to your machine from hackers, trojans, and some viruses out in the world, there is usually a little icon in the corner of your task bar near your clock.

When you hover your mouse over them, you should see something about 'Personal firewall, or prtection'.
If you have nothing like that and your on Windows XP, it has a firewall built into it.
You can find out if its on by going to your Control Panel, if you have Service Pack 2 then look for an icon of a firewall, if it is on it will be obvious.
Yours might be under Network Connections if your on Service Pack 1. Click on that and when it opens, 'Right' click on the Local Area Connection and choose 'Properties'  .. then choose the 'Advanced Tab'  you will see a place to Protect My computer from outside 'scary things'.  If there is a tick in that box, its on.

Do this for me and get me a little information about the set up of your machine.

Are you using Windows XP ?
Whats the name of your DSL modem and model number would help?
Do you have a router, to allow more then one computer to have access to the internet in your house?  If yes, can I have the name and model?
Did you find any firewalls?

Once you have this information post it here, or feel free to visit us in the Live Chat on WinMX at

Then we can test your uploads for you and get you sorted...
