Damn Web host
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:06:56 am »
Recently winmxworld moved over from a dedicated server to a web hosting account, the theory was that it would make things easier to manage... theories are great in theory

The first issue had was with constant database connection problems - i made a small tweak to get rid of most of the errors (by retrying) but it still didn't sort it out so was still an annoyance.

Secondly the database has been corrupted TWICE in the last week... yes nice and reliable there... thankfully no data loss either time so no need to restore backups and lose a few hours worth of posts

And to add to things last night it just completely failed, apparently winmxworld went slightly over the limit for the number of database queries they allow... which btw was not mentioned in the advertising!

Basically in short I have moved the site back to a nice cosy server where it is free to connect to the mysql server whenever it wants without errors and without limits and without being corrupted twice in one week (or at least i hope so anyway)

It also turns out their DNS servers take several hours to update (!!!) then once they finally do update they have set a 24 hour TTL so it will take ages for www.winmxworld.com to be pointing to the correct place - so as a temporary measure the forum is currently being run from a different URL with the old server redirecting here, so those still using the old host will get a redirect to the temporary URL on the new host - i should be able to remove this in 24 hours time and go back to using www.winmxworld.com (in theory)

And now, i can go to bed... like i was going to do 3 hours ago... if something is broken (other than having an ugly URL in the address bar as you browse the forum) then I'll sort it out when i wake up

actually they should have been fixed before i passed out...

edit: i did fix it by setting the character set of the site, but the forum is on a different character set than everything else for some reason... so now i've set the forum correctly it should be fixed

OK, it should all be working well now - the main site and forum should be all working fine (on the correct URL) and the other sections are still with the old host - they seem fine for anything non-mysql so i might as well leave all of the non-mysql stuff with them (like the archive)

hopefuly no problems?

My nic appears to have some problems with the change. Do I need to re-register in non-ascii format ?

not sure why but yours was in one character set and yet others are in a different one :-S but all sorted now anyway (btw i did your nic at the same time you did it... lol)

the forum is now set to UTF-8, i hope it does't mess up the other language sections (i have no idea what it was set to before - but the other sections look correct on UTF-8 - or at least there are lots of letters and sort of right looking symbols which is how it normally looks)

as sam just pointed out to me in a PM, there is no spell checker now - i didn't notice because i don't use it i use the google toolbar (lol) the reason being because it needs aspell installed, i don't think i want to install that on an already overloaded server, i'm sure you can manage without :-) (if your spelling is that bad... google toolar, heh)

you ever tried the google toolbars built in spell checker? i use it in several places no need to worry about if the site has a spell checker (and is often faster than the spell checkers sites have anyway)... in fact i even use the toolbars spell checker on gmail (even though gmail has the same spell checker built in!)

The Å from my nic is borrowed from another language character set while the remaining letters are from ASCII name maker. Maybe that's why. All's good now anyway. Thanks
