DOWNLOADING IS TAKING SOOOO LONG IT'S PAINFUL
« on: February 23, 2006, 08:04:42 pm »
Well I downloaded winmx a couple of days ago and thought all my problems were over but no such luck! Now when I search and find a music file I want to download it invariably takes over 2 hours to download if not longer. I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me what settings are best for my incoming and outgoing bandwiths and whether or not this will solve my problem!

https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/ will help you get your bandwith throttles set correctly, slow downloads can also be caused by other things though including ISP interference, changing to different ports can sometimes help in this situation.  Who is your ISP? what connection type are you? (cable, dsl, 56k/dialup)

I altered my bandwith settings as advised and noticed a difference for a while but now I am back in the same boat as before with downloads taking forever to complete if they don't drop out first that is! Any ideas as to how to solve this problem please?

As a newbie, I don't know what download speeds to expect.  The max I have gotten is about 5000 bytes per second.  If that's normal, o.k.  The problem I have is that after a few thousand bytes, the transfer stops and next thing I know I'm in a queue again.  Is it normal for them not to complete once they have started?

Your maximum download speed will be governed by the capability of the Internet connection you're using (how 'fast' it is) and the rate at which the remote file sharer(s) can send the file to you.  5000 bytes/sec would be about the limit a 56K dialup connection could download at.  More modern 'broadband' connections are usually a lot more capable though (often 10x, 20x, 30x+ faster).

Regarding you transfers stopping.  Some people don't like sending files to folks who don't also share files and will cancel transfers, so make sure you have something shared for others.  Another common problem with file transfers these days is some Internet service providers actively block file-sharing traffic in an effort to stop users using file-sharing applications.  It could be that, assuming all your downloads start then die before disconnecting, that your ISP is blocking WinMX file transfers.  A thing to look out for is whether the download slows down to nothing before it quits, or whether it just disconnects instantly.  If it slows to nothing it's often the latter here.

Hi I am also having, speed problems  & I am DSL Broadband, BT Voyager 190 ADSL Modem, NOT ROUTER, on AOL Broadband silver, supposedly 1Mb/s. Speedwise, as tested by PC Pitstop Optimise TM. If I choose 1 meg connection, download speed is approx 800Kb/s, yet if I choose 768MB connection that goes upto appox 900-947 Kbs, it doesn't test upload speed. But I do have a prog that does, again the download speed is around 900kb/s the max upload speed I got was 234Kb/s. Note: WinMX measures only b/s not Kb/s. How about a WinMX speed tester? I am getting speeds of 0.001b/s - 0.97b/s Up & Downloading, even from & to T3+ users, obviousy the speed does go up if there is more than 1 user but not a great deal, small files will transfer faster, and the bigger the file the longer it takes. I have had several requests to increase speed, I have tried only having 1 download & 1 upload, but that doesn't seem to make any difference, whether I increase that to 50 of each or not, changing the bandwith throttle, that is the up/download limits seems to make no difference either. So you are not alone.
