Browser Alert !!
« on: September 21, 2006, 10:17:10 pm »
It seems there is yet another minor flaw being exploited by some porn sites so all users should be scared witless, well it sounds as if thats what is happening

Microsoft has issued warnings about a serious flaw in Internet Explorer that allows attackers to hijack a PC via the popular browser.
Security firm Sunbelt Software said the vulnerability was being actively exploited on some porn websites.

So far there is no fix to close the bug in the browsing program but Microsoft has issued advice about how to avoid falling victim.
It said it would patch the bug in its next security update due on 10 October.

Researcher Adam Thomas uncovered the exploit which revolves around the way that the Internet Explorer browser handles a particular form of graphics known as vector graphics.
A properly crafted webpage can exploit this problem and install almost anything they want on the target machine.

Its a pity that most firewalls are likely to spoil the fun that is suggested by the tone of the alert above, if we showered as often as we hear tales of doom and gloom from security software sites, the world would run out of water within a week .

*cough* stay clear of those porn sites guys

erm, what else are we going to use our broadband connections for if we aren't maxing it out 24/7 with porn downloads? let me guess, "educational research" and "chatting about non-pornographic things"? yeh, right...

it is a very useful tool - many security experts use IE to assist in their research by collecting as much spyware and as many viruses as possible

More news on this one folks.

Microsoft has released a patch for a bug in the Internet Explorer browser two weeks early to combat a mounting number of attacks made via the loophole.
The software giant usually releases security updates once a month.

However, the growing number of attacks using the loophole forced it to move early.
This one affected many different platforms in many scenarios that are considered by customers to be common usage," said Microsoft researchers on its security update blog.

Despite this Microsoft said that the number of attacks launched via the bug was "very limited".

Better now than later I agree, as I mentioned the amount of folks affected by some of these "exploits" if often limited to the security researcher and his friends.

well to be honest, KM was right, they do attack IE because its the most popular browser untill there was seriose comtetition from other companies like netscape and firefox, and like Siver Stripes, i use firefox myself and i like it because they dont use activeX, thats the crapy plugins you  need to run IE and also adware & spyware hitch a ride on activeX because its standard.

microsoft have a history of releasing things full of security holes, if it's popular and it's the least secure program out there then expect your system to be messed up

as firefox becomes more popular more bugs will no doubt be found, however they will probably all be fixed quicker than microsoft can even confirm a bug exists in IE, and I doubt there will be any major flaws because the biggest security flaws in IE (like activex, allowing any program to be run on your system) aren't in firefox

microsoft released defender, its a adware & spyware remover * cough * that realy is wonderful NOT at getting rid of the crap they gave you in the first place, i have read alot of reports, some ppl say you cant uninstall it as it damages your registry when you try, others say it dont find the bugs, and a report that i cant find at the moment showed a test with 10 different removers, the top ones was spyware doctor, xsoft spy, ad-aware, spybot, spyware terminator, defender was * cough * closer to the bottom  than the other eight above it, this is the best microsoft can offer aparentlly
