Sharing certain file extensions
« on: April 16, 2008, 03:50:23 am »
I have read every post in all 48 pages of forum topics here, but have not found an answer to my particular problem.  I am trying to share video files, but they can't seem to be recognized in my library no matter what I do.  The files themselves say they are an MPEG-4, (or to be exact, "256Kb MPEG-4").  I have tried "adding new file type," and no matter what combination of letters I use, WinMX still seems to overlook these files.
I am using WinMX v3.54 beta 4 and Windows XP Home Edition SP2.  I really want to share these files, as they are television shows from the 1950's, and they are all in the public domain and legal to be shared.  Has anybody else had this problem or know of a way to overcome WinMX not recognizing these files in my folders?
It recognized the 3 .avi files I have in that folder, but not any of the MPEG-4 files.  Thanks in advance!

Hi HaarFager, This should work for you....

MPEG4 (.mp4)

.mp4 did not work for me.  Neither did MPEG-4, .MPEG-4, MPEG4, .MPEG4, mpeg-4, .mpeg-4, mpeg4, .mpeg4, mpg4, or .mpg4.  None of those combinations worked for me.  Now that I look, however, ".mp4" is the file extension Windows gave it, though.  So, it should have worked, but doesn't.  Don't know what's up with that.

I downloaded one of these files from the net to check this and it worked fine for me.Once you added the .mp4 extension did you make sure that file type was check marked in the folder the files are shared in?

Yes, I did make sure that the file type was checked in the folder that was in the library screen of WinMX.  I also tried with a couple .mov files - same thing.  They're in a folder where everything else shows up, but not these two files.  Check mark added in folder view, also.

Ok silly question here, but did you refresh the library after adding the new file type?  lol

Another thing you might want to check is the properties of the files...Make sure they're not checked as "hidden" or "read only"

Not a silly question at all - when you're trying to get to the root of the problem, you have to eliminate everything.  Yes, I did refresh after adding the new file type - many times and from each folder, too.

And, no, none of the files are marked as "hidden" or "read only."  These are good suggestions, but none have helped so far.  Keep the suggestions coming, though!  There must be a solution!

Try right click on you winmx in your taskbar and select reset all windows then refresh
Or perhaps You could try a fresh install of winmx it can be obtained from the link below

The first suggestion didn't work, and neither did a fresh re-install.  What's going on with my WinMX?  You might need to try and get an .mp4 to work on your system like the types I'm using.  Here is where I'm getting those .mp4's - totally legal and above board, so you won't have to worry about my displaying their address here:

Download one of the "256Kb MPEG-4" files and see if they can be shared on your system, please.

Okies sussed the problem i downloaded one of the files as suggested and ........................
Go to settings (top of winmx page) open and click on the library tab you will see a list of file types & a option to add new ...click on add new and you will see this come up    New Filetype (.ext)      <<<<< highlight this by clicking on it and select edit from the options below .... change this to       New Filetype (.mp4)               ( you can change new filetype to any name  you like also ..... go to your library and right click your folder with your .mp4 s in and go down the list to filetype.... then select your new extention you made and select share..... click on refresh all and you should be good to go

As you can see from the shot below it worked fine for me

Sorry for the late reply, but I was out of town for two days due to work.  I tried what you suggested and that did the trick!  Thanks for figuring that out!  I can't believe that other people haven't had this particular problem before.  Just to make sure of one thing, though....  when other people browse me, will they see these files, even though they don't have these extensions added into to their list of recognized extensions?  I mean, if I went to all this trouble to share these files and nobody could see them, that would be a darn shame!  Thanks for your assistance in this, though - I appreciate the help!

The files will show up in your browse, as for a regular dude out there searching, unless he does a search for 'any file' then he wont see them because WinMX is only designed to search for certain default file types.  Most ppl do know however this and know to search for 'any file type' when looking for .mp4's.

I don't think your problem is related to fake files. But to eliminate fakes from your searches you can go to this site https://patch.winmxconex.com/ and download "Setup for Existing Installs of WinMX" (if your not already using this patch)

Your problem seems to be that your dsl modem has router capabilities and will need ports forwarded in order for your downloads and uploads to work correctly.

Nice to see you provided info about your system and the modem being a 6100f .... is this a westell brand name modem? If so i dont see that exact model number but the link below should be pretty close to what yours will be.Give that a try and see if it helps you out.Post back how you made out and if your modem isn't a westell can you provide the brand name of the modem. Here's the link for instructions on forwarding ports for winmx....

hey reef...sorry it took me so long to reply to ya. been busy. anyways, i did exactly what the link told me and it worked! thanx a lot! no, mine isn't westell....its just a generic modem from verizon. i put as much info up for as i could because i know that i can't get help if i am vague about things. i looked at the top back and sides of the modem and all it says is its verizon. the model # is on the front of the little black box and says 6100F. how cheap can verizon get? jeez! anyway, thanks a bunch for the help. it worked like a charm. i think i'll bookmark the page just for future reference if i have to re-format my hard drive again. thats a different story all together. thanks :)

Cheers
